Upgrade from NS4.8

Postby notnac » Sat 27 Dec, 2003 2:37 pm

Hello all,

I think this question has been asked before, but I can't find it.

I have a Gateway with a 200MHz cpu and 64MB of RAM.

When using NS4.8 on some websites I get a message that NS4.8 might not work correctly on that website and that I should upgrade to a newer version of Netscape. Sometimes NS4.8 just hangs up on a website that IE and NS7.1 have no problem with. (The IE is on the same PC, the NS7.1 is on a slightly faster PC.)

I use Netscape for both, browseing and email. What do you recommend that I upgrade to? I seem to remember reading that NS7.1 needs atleast 300MHz.

Thanks for you time and trouble,
joe

Netscape reccomends a Pentium CPU (233mhz recommended) with 64mb of ram or higher. You could try it, but I think it would be rather slow. You should check out K-Meleon, it's a very small fast browser based on the same rendering engine as Netscape 7.1. K-Meleon would offer a much more enjoyable browsing experience than Netscape 7.1 on that machine.

Perhaps it is worth upgrading your memory?

Mandrake:
Thanks for the advice. I went to the K-Meleon website. I think that would be a thing worth trying for a browser, but I would still need Netscape for my email, no?
I could probably use K-Meleon for browseing and Netscape for email, But using two different programs; one for browsing and another one for email would confuse my wife. It would be even harder to get her to learn a new program because she hasn't run into any websites that don't work with NS 4.8. I guess most of the education websites are compatible with older levels of Netscape.

Thanks for your thoughts on upgrading the memory. One thing is that the NS 7.1 mentions the computer speed as a requirement. I think I have the memory required.
The second thing is that I've had trouble finding memory to upgrade my (very) old Gateway. I would like to add another 64MB to it, but I may have to settle on adding only 32MB.

One last question: Will Mozilla work on my PC and is it's email compatible with Netscape i.e. can I move old emails and the address books over to Mozilla from NS.

Once again thanks to both of you for your advice.

If you were prepared to, you could use 4.x for email and K-Meleon as a web browser. If you had more ram you could try to use Netscape 7.02 or 7.1.

I had 128MB, and that was not quite enough for 7.1. I upgraded to 256 MB, and with my 350Mhz, I do very well. I am not sure about Mozilla Firebird, which has no mail, but it can be linked to the free standing Thunderbird.
I am not sure because I have cable, and whatever you do will depend on your ISP. You may be able to do what you want, or it may be difficult.
You can manage with Mozilla1.5, Mozilla Firebird or even NS7.02 with 200Mhz processor. The Netscape mail files are completely interchangeable with Mozilla or Thunderbird's.
As for education websites, it depends. Some will strongly recommend upgrading to NS6, a catchall phrase. Other site will shy away from NS>4.8, mainly because the tech people do not have the time to handle what they do, and keep up with the rapid changes of Netscape and Mozilla.
I was the tech support for the Netscapes, at the University, until I retired last year.

They are, because a significant number of schools/universities/colleges are still running Netscape 4 on their computers.

Would it not be possible for your wife to continue using Netscape 4.8 for browsing, but you use K-Meleon for browsing?

Hartlandcat,

Thanks for your thought on using K-meleon fro browsing and NS4.8 for email.
I will try that. I assume that they both can be used at the same time i.e. If I'm doing email and it has a url I can cut and paste the url into K-meleon, and browse.

thanks to all of you for your help and advice.

I was able to set up Netscape4.8 mail with the External Application button in MozillaFirebird. The trick is to set up 4.8 to open only Mail and News, from Preferences|Appearance. Then you can select the path in MozFirebird, and you should be the familiar N shortcut in the top toolbar.
If you click on the shortcut, you will get the profile manager. You select the desired User profile, and you get your mail. Everything is done internally, and you will have to cut and paste, if you use a different default browser.
I know that there was a similar way, except for the button in Kmeleon0.7. It did not exist in 0.8. I have not checked the later updates of Km.
