UPGRADE HELP

Postby LARRYB » Tue 30 Dec, 2003 5:54 pm

I have been using NS 4.5 for about 8 years and have had no problems. Over the past 6 months I have noticed a slowdown on my downloads, and when I uploade new pages they take alot longer to appear on the screen than before. I upgraded my old system from 64mb to 256mb thinking that it would help. My system is an older intel 200 mhz MMX, 256mb, and a 16mb video card.
I was thinking of upgrading to a newer version of Netscape, but it looks like I can only go to V4.8 due to my system requirements not meeting the 6.x/7.x requirements.

One thing that I noticed if I had a page that was taking long to load or I got a error, I would use Windows Explorier and the page would load, but not in Netscape.

Will the version 4.8 improve my loading of pages???

PS, my modem and modem connection has not changed in 2 years.

Any suggestions besides going to ISDN or Cable, would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Netscape 4.8 would load some pages a bit better, but nothing dramatic. You really should consider upgrading to Mozilla 1.5. The 256mb of ram in your box would compensate for the almost total lack of power in your 200mhz processor.

IE can load the pages because, put simply, IE 5.x or 6.x has a better rendering engine that Netscape 4.x. Of course the Gekco rendering engine used in Netscape 6.x and 7.x, and Mozilla blows away the IE rendering engine anyday.

Larry,
are you emptying the Cache? From your Preferences|Advanced|Cache
empty Disk Cache. When I first got this computer, my wife and I used quite heavily, and in few months, everything came to a standstill. Emptied the Cache, and were as good as new. Nothing would change with 4.8, since you would be using the same User profile. And, if you go to a Netscape7, do not get 7.1, but rather 7.02.
