URU: Ages beyond Myst/URU Demo out!

Postby profman » Mon 17 Nov, 2003 1:00 am

URU: Ages beyond Myst, is the next, great thinking-based game to come out of the Myst series of games and is now for sale (for about $50 USD). URU, like all of the Myst series of games, is primarily a thinking and reasoning-skills game. I find that I use and sharpen my problem-solving skills in these games, although I may look for a few hints if I get too frustrated. No aliens or blood-spurting action is ever seen, just beautiful scenery and great, thoughtful "problems" to solve.

A very large, but very nice demo, of URU is now available from several sources on the internet. The Demo download file, urudemo.exe, is about 115 MB large. It seems to contain the first introductory "level" of URU. It also may indicate if your computer can actually run the full URU game if you should ever buy it. (I'm still waiting for a better price, but my local Best Buy is offering a $10 gift card to those who buy it this week.) You should have at least an 800 MHz machine with a very good, recent vintage video card, and a decent audio system. The video card really seems to be the crucial requirement to run URU. You will also need to possess "administrator privileges" in order to install the Demo. A download page with a link that was fast for me on cable at home was:

PC Gameworld.com Try the "thecheatfactory.com" link.

My newest, home-built system running Windows XP Pro runs the URU demo nicely. It is a 2.8 GHz P4 system with 1 GB of DDR400 RAM with a Radeon 9600 Pro video card with 128 MB of memory. The on-board sound did OK for the Demo, and I hope it does OK for the full game.

Your poor webmaster does not have time for computer games. :-)
But still available for Monopoly games, if friends come over. (not the computer/net version)

It's a nice computer.

Antony: Have you ever tried putting two Monopoly different types of Monopoly together? The boards are linked via the free parking space, and one travels around the board in a figure 8 shape! Then you can work out details for having railroads and Utilities. Good fun if normal Monopoly is getting a little boring.

Ah, the excellent Myst series of games! The one game I've played out of that series was Riven, a very complex and fun game.

Geez, that is a nice system! The Radeon 9xxx cards are very good for gaming, and like you my newest system just uses onboard sound as opposed to a high-quality addon card. My machine is a 2 Ghz overclocked to 2.2ghz, with 512mb ram and a Radeon 9200 128mb card. I'll try and download the demo tonight, just before I go to bed - as the speeds are slow on dialup.

Hmm, interesting idea. But I only have one set.
But what if someone got two sets of the dark blues (Park Land and Mayfair)?

Each set is different, for example: We use both an Australian Set and an English set. Mayfair/Park Lane and there Australian counterparts are seperate sets. The utilities are counted as normal for one or two (4 or 10 times) - but if you gain three it rises to 15 times, and all four is 30 times the ammount on the dice. As for the railroads, owning upto four is as per the normal rules, but owning 5 increases the ammount to $400, owning 6 makes it $600, owning 7 makes it $800, and owning all eight makes it a whopping $1000!

If someone owned both dark blue sets, they can build on each individually, and they are totally seperate sets.

A Star Trek edition? Must be very valuable! A friend of mine has a Star Trek chess set, that is worth quite a bit too.

I love to play Monopoly. I haven't played in years but it was a fun game. The original monopoly is the only one I know. Parker Brothers version, probably the first version. I know I played when I was eleven as I was at a girlfriends house for a sleepover.
We were up to play at 5:00 AM, and when it was time for breakfast, I fainted. First faint I had ever experienced, and I landed in the bathtub  So it's something I guess I will never forget. It is still a great game.

Dear Wellander,
I believe it is very rude to reply things like this.

This thread is not just for you.

Wellander: If you are not interested in a thread that is being discussed, then don't reply!

Can you believe the download is 320mb? I've been starting the download at Midnight and having it finish at 8am with LeechGet, I should have the file after another day or two. Of course, with your DSL or Cable - you probably completed the download in an hour or two!

 320 MB? The Demo's file size is about 115 MB. What are you really downloading? Not the whole game, I hope?

It did take me a few minutes (less than four) to download the Demo at home, although it probably took me 15 minutes to find a fast download site.

I was sure I read a file size of 320 or so MB, but anyway - I've had LeechGet going, and the file has just finished downloading, and yes, the file size is about 115 mb. I never even bothered to check the file size, as I just entered the URL into LeechGet and had it sit in my system tray for the whole time. 4 minutes? It took me ~9 hours, a bit of a difference!
