user prefs. IMAP "Trash" folder name

Postby Ninho » Wed 03 Nov, 2004 1:01 pm

Hi ! this is my 1st visit, please bear with the n00b...

Using Messenger 4.7 for News & partly for Mail - which I much prefer over even the latest MS product.

My general query then, is there a freely accessible list of "prefs" settings ?

My special query : is there a "pref" or other tweak for telling Messenger that the trash folder on my IMAP account is "Dleted Items3, NOT "Trash" ?
Renaming "Deleted folder" on the (MS Exchange) server is not an option...

TIA

I think it's a bit complicated to rename those folder names.

Hi Tony

What does that mean to me you
think it's a bit complicated to rename those folder names.
ahem ?

Am I correct you mean you have no idea whether it's feasible, or not, and how it could be done, however complicated ? I am ready for "complicated" solutions, too !

In either case that's /not/ the bit of help I'd expected from this forum...

I hope I am wrong.

If you have an IMAP account like I do, all deleted mail will be removed from the server. You may accumulate mail in the Trash. I don't know, because I have always selected to empty trash on exit.
It is possible to do almost anything with these program, but what is the advantage? Why don't you create another folder, call it whatever you want, and move the e-mails which you would delete in it (right click| move to ....
I can't believe that you want to save every deleted message. This way you can select what you may want to keep, and junk what you don't want.
And, don't forget to select Compact folders to free up considerable space.

Hi Fulvio !

Why don't you create another folder, call it whatever you want, and move the e-mails which you would delete in it (right click| move to ....

The problem was not with how I use or misuse IMAP. Having the recycle bin folder named Deleted Items at the server, while Netscape expects it to be named Trash was causing all sorts of errors. These folder names happen to be special, and they can't be renamed or deleted.

I have solved the problem, not in Netscape but Server side: I was able to rename Deleted Items to Trash, which is impossible either of Netscape or Outlook or the Web access client for Oulook, but worked using... MS Outlook Express. now everything is kept synchronized and everyone's happy :=)

I can't believe that you want to save every deleted message. This way you can select what you may want to keep, and junk what you don't want.

Of course not. I delete them permanently. Problem is solved, anyway TY

solution for thunderbird

Postby ano_replier » Thu 20 Jul, 2006 5:46 am

As this topic keeps popping up when googling for this problem, here is a solution for Thunderbird:
Edit your configuration file prefs.js and add the following line:

user_pref("mail.server.server3.trash_folder_name", "Deleted Items");

where you have to replace server3 with the correct name.

I have no idea, if there is a solution for Communicator, save for patching the .exe file.
