Viewing additional text on an image

Postby PCUser » Wed 14 Jan, 2004 7:26 pm

Just today I have realized that when I put the cursor over an imagine Netscape does not show the alternative text that was included in the HTML code of a page (<img ... alt="text">), and frankly I have not seen this text on any images.
Is this a known bug of Netscape or is there something I need to set manually? :?

Hello PCUser,
Mozilla and Netscape 6/7 do not show alternative text for images as tooltips in the way Netscape 4.x does. This was done on purpose, as the purpose of <...alt="text"> is not to provide a mouse-over tooltip, but to provide text that is loaded in place of an image in, say, a text-only browser.
To provide mouse-over tooltips for links or images in Mozilla and Netscape 6/7, <...title="text"> should be used instead.

Viewing additional text on an image

Postby Jillita » Fri 23 Jan, 2004 1:06 pm

Hi all -

I've read all the threads about using TITLE tags instead of ALT tags to view an image's mouseover text in NS 7.1. Seems pretty straight forward, but despite lots of testing I still can't get any text over my images. I'm new to NS 7.1....is there a setting I'm missing? Here's an example of my code:

<IMG SRC="images/titles/projectoverview.gif" ALT="Project Overview" TITLE="More Project Overview">

I need to have the mouseovers work in various browsers, and so far NS 7.1 is the only one I can't get to work. Thanks for any help!

I know nothing about programming, but what I gather from Andrew is that Alt will not provide what you want. Note that you have one ALT and one TITLE in your code.

I believe that both tags will provide what I need: mouseover text for images. ALT works for NS 4x, and TITLE works for IE and Mozilla and should work for NS6/7. Having both tags in shouldn't be an issue; TITLE overrides ALT if they are both there.
