Netscape Toolbar in Netscape 7.2 is missing Toolbar buttons

Postby pormike » Sat 22 Jul, 2006 11:30 am

Netscape 7.2 is my favorite browser to use. I just got a new computer and installed Netscape 7.2 on it, but the Netscape Toolbar Option is supposed to have a big box at the bottom listing Toolbar buttons that you can enable/disable.

Well, my Toolbar buttons box is there but there is NOTHING in it. I have tried re-installing
Netscape 7.2 as "Full Install", "Custom Install" and "Recommended Install" and in all 3 installs there are no Toolbar buttos.

I even wrote to MozDev group that developed the Toolbar and asked them for help and there response was "old browser ... try Firefox". Well, I want Netscape 7.2. I mostly miss the
"clear browser history" button.

Does anyone know how I can get the Toolbar buttons to reappear or know of a download site that has the Netscape 7.2 broswer that is fully functional?

Thanks in advance ...

Note by profman: Please post all Netscape 7.x issues in the Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox Forums! Thank you.

The Prefbar extension adds a toolbar that will let you clear your cache and history with one click. To the best of my knowledge, it's still Netscape 7.2-compatible.

You might want to look into Seamonkey as an alternative to Netscape 7.2, which can be summed up as an updated version of Netscape 7.x, without all the proprietary AOL additions (AIM, Webmail integration, etc.).

The MozDev group were right ... Netscape 7.2 is obsolete now, and contains security holes that will never be fixed.

Having said that, those security holes have been resolved, but not in Netscape. My advice to you would be to
download and install SeaMonkey. Like Netscape 7.x, it's based upon the Mozilla App-Suite, but is much more
up-to-date than both of those products. While Mozilla Firefox is an excellent internet browser that is also
up-to-date, it is only a browser, while SeaMonkey is a fully fledged internet application suite.

I noticed you are currently using Netscape 8.1. Although that is currently the latest version of any Netscape
branded internet browser, it is built upon a fairly old copy of the Mozilla Firefox codebase, with too much
additional, needless bloat added. And since it's based upon old Firefox code, it also has a few security
issues that have since been resolved within the codebase of Firefox and the SeaMonkey suite.

My advice to you would be ditch Netscape altogether, as it seems unlikely that a newer version is to be
released anytime soon, if at all. Your best bet, if you want a extremely close to identical experience to
what you've had with Netscape 7.x, would be to switch to the SeaMonkey suite, and then install
the Netscape Toolbar (direct from Netscape's FTP server) on to that.

I'll add to this message shortly with links to get SeaMonkey and the Netscape Toolbar.

===========

Update Edit 1:
Don_HH2K has beat me to it with reference to SeaMonkey, and a link to download it.

===========

Update Edit 2:
To get the Netscape Toolbar installed and working with SeaMonkey . . .

Your original problem about buttons missing from the Netscape Toolbar was, as far as I could tell, due to an extra
component called JSLib. This provides bits of JavaScript that the Netscape Toolbar requires to work correctly.

This component can be installed direct from Netscape FTP server here. Once that's been installed, you can then
click here to install the actual Netscape Toolbar itself. Again, this is coming direct from Netscape's FTP server.

Update Edit 3:

Here's a screengrab of my SeaMonkey with the Netscape Toolbar (plus a few other extensions) installed . . .

Best choice is to right click|save link as. The .xpi file can be installed later. Both click here gave a link to the same .xpi file.

That's more like it. Thanks, although I doubt that the Netscape Toolbar will tell me much.

Many thanks to Don_HH2K and DJGM

I couldn't get Netscape toolbar to work and when i tried your suggestions, my Netscape 7.2
got turned into Netscape 8.1 ... so I took your other suggestion and just dumped both Netscapes and installed SeaMonkey. I still cannot get the Netscape Toolbar to install in
SeaMonkey (it will install in IE, but not SeaMonkey), but I used Don's suggestion of
Prefbar extension and I got the clear history and tons of other stuff to play with ... but it was mainly the clear history that I really wanted.

Thanks a lot to both of you .. I appreciate your help ... Michael

Ahhhh, that sounds to me like you were trying to install the version of the Netscape Toolbar made for Internet Explorer.
This only works in IE, as it uses a proprietary Microsoft ActiveX control to install it as an extension to Internet Explorer.

The version of the Netscape Toolbar I was referring to in my earlier message, was the XUL based one, bundled as part
of Netscape 7.2, and can also be added as an extension to the old Mozilla Suite and the newer SeaMonkey Suite.

BTW ... in case you're wondering, XUL is the cross platform technology with which all the bits and pieces of the user
interface in Mozilla based browser products such as SeaMonkey, Netscape 6/7/8 and Firefox is made with. This is
so that, by default, they'll look and work the pretty much the same way on whatever system they're installed.

If you open up SeaMonkey, install the JSLib component from my first link, then the "XUL-ified" Netscape Toolbar
from the second link, then close and restart SeaMonkey. Once SM is restarted, the Netscape Toolbar appears
hidden by default. To reveal it, go to - View (on the menu bar) - Show/Hide - Netscape Toolbar . . .

I right clicked and saved both link. I, then, installed the JSLib.xpi, followed by the toolbar.
My toolbar was not hidden by default. It is a "so what" toolbar, because it present so much stuff that I don't need, but it is inmy SM1.0.2.
Just for the record, I drag and drop the .xpi file into the SM shortcut (it is not a real drg and drop. more like a door knock. SM opens, and the installation begins. Whatever is installed needs restarting the program to be active).
Prefbar3.3 is the way to go. It is compatible even with the Firefox2.0 and 3.0 nightlies.
I use it to clear cache, any time I wish, although clear cache or history is not necessary in Firefox. My main use of the Prefbar is to add some essential links. My personal toolbar has only folders, but I use seven website links in the Prefbar.

Netscape Toolbar

Postby pormike » Sat 22 Jul, 2006 9:04 pm

I got the Netscape Toolbar to install, but the Toolbar Buttons section at the bottom is still empty/blank ... wonder what the problem is? I'm just gonna uninstall it and use the prefbar
extension that Don mentioned.

I dediced to uninstall the Netscape Toolbar. I got a list of items to be uninstalled, and then the Wizard closed Seamonkey. And, then nothing happened. I happened to have the uninstaller extention , which did a quick job, but left behind a number of netscape toolbar item. Who wants such a mess?
