Netscape 7.2 Mail and Netscape 8.2 Browser=Interoperability

Postby Crumbled » Tue 08 Aug, 2006 9:07 pm

Currently I am running a Netscape 7.2 Mail Client and Netscape 8.2 as my Browser.

I am able to get the Netscape 8.2 Browser to come up when I click on a URL in the Netscape 7.2 Mail Client BUT I CAN NOT get the Netscape 7.2 Mail Client to come up when I click on a "MAILTO:..." URL in Netscape 8.2.

How can I get Netscape 8.2 to run Netscape 7.1 Mail Client?

Cheers!

Have you tried setting Netscape 7.1 Mail as default email programme in Windows?

Antony,

How is this done? Setting Netscape 7.1 mail client as default email while using Netscape 8.2 Browser?

Cheers,

Trying to keep numbers straight, before I get completely confused. There is no NS8.2, but only 8.1 Browser. That can be selected as default browser, since there is no mail in it. however, the default mail can be selected independently of the browser settings, from NS7.1 preferences|Mail and News| select it default for mail.
But since NS7.1 is both browser and mail, a link in NS7.1 will not open NS8.1, but rather in itself. This issue came up very early in the development of NS8.x, and it showed that it could be tied to a standalone mail client, like Mozilla Thunderbird, and behave properly ( some people may disagree, but you cannot use NS8.x as a proper default browser, and also use NS7.x as mail client).

Sorry I had a typo, but my reply is like Don's, after correcting it. You have to select, at least, Mail, to be your default.

8.1 7.2 Interoperability

Postby Crumbled » Wed 09 Aug, 2006 1:11 pm

That still does not answer the question:

How can I get Netscape 8.1 to run Netscape 7.2 Mail Client when I click on a URL link for it in a 8.1 Browser?

I think I need to set Netscape 7.2 as the default email in Windows XP; how can I do this?

Cheers!

You can set Netscape 7.2's Mail and Newsgroups as the default Windows mail client by opening Netscape 7.2, going to Edit -> Preferences -> Mail & Newsgroups, and checking the two boxes "Mail" and "News" under "Make Netscape Mail and Newsgroups the default application for".

I'd agree with Fulvio in that you should give Thunderbird a try, though. Using 7.2's mail client along with another browser can be a bit tricky.

If even possible.

Nah, it's possible. I did it with Netscape 6.2's mail client and K-Meleon at one point. There apparently wasn't any way to get links to open in K-Meleon rather than NS6, though, but provided you don't mind copy/pasting links into your other browser, it works fine.

I CAN NOT get the Netscape 7.2 Mail Client to come up when I click on a "MAILTO:..." URL in Netscape 8.2.

This was the original question. How are you trying to do that? Is the Mail to: in the website?
Or right click|Mail to.? Please give an example. I can do it from Firefox by means of an extention. I select the website, and click on a button from the extention, and Thunderbird comes up with the link. As far as I know it is not possible to do that from NS8.1.
You need two things. One is to have you mail client as default, and the other to come up with the desired info. I have tried to check this out in NS8.1, but it has locked up on starting it. It does that all the time the first time, but, now it is good for the scrap heap.
I got it on the third attempt. I can't see any way to do mail to: in NS8.1, although I can right click|copy shortcut. Then open the mail to send, and paste in the message. There is a Mail button which can be placed on the personal toolbar. I have it on the left of the multibar.
If there is a Mail to: in 8.1, it is not of general use.
