Netscape 7.1 CK-SillyDog issue - mails don't appear

Postby EEN » Mon 04 Apr, 2011 10:13 am

Hello everyone,

I'm in Oslo, hoping someone in this forum can be so kind as to assist me.

Suddenly the list of emails on the right-hand side of my SillyDog screen is totally empty, regardless of which email folder I select on the left hand side. My Inbox still grows as new emails arrive, but they do not show up in the list which is currently totally empty.

I noticed intially that most of the emails were gone, only a few files remained. After som more days the remianing emails disappeared to leave the list space totally void. The Inbox physical file had not changed. I have tried to delete the Inbox.msf file and have it regenerate itself, but no no avail. I am now at a loss of what to do about this.

I decided to reorganize the folders in the left part of the screen to do away with the subfolders for now. So now there are'nt any subfolders, but this changed nothing. If I navigate to the phyical files folder in Windows XP, copy a mail file to the desktop, rename it to .txt, it opens fine in an simple text editor as expected, with readble ascii code and some garbled content in case there was an attachment. Looks quite normal to me.

Norton does not find anything bad, but I do not rule out that there may have been an attack the other day when I inadvertently accessed the Internet via the Netscape.

Anyone got a clue?

best

I should perhaps add that the Inbox is rather large, so I have now temporatily moved it away from its default path location to see if that made any difference, but it didn't. I still do not get any messages to appear in the pane to the right from the remaining email files, even after also first deleting their respective .msf counterparts.

Hi,
just a couple of clarifications.
1. Which browser are you using now. I can't tell. Have you been using Netscape 7.1 for mail, all this time?
In case you don't know, NS7.1 has come out about three years ago, it was updated to 7.2 in late 2008, and never updated again for Mail. In other words, you are using an old and discontinued suite.
That does not mean that it should not work. Including the fact that you say that :
Inbox is rather large
, and
temporarily moved it away from its default path location
, I am not surprised that you don't see anything.
What is large? I would say that if you have an Inbox in the range of hundreds of MB, you would have problems.
The first solution is to Compact the folder, in case you had not, and had deleted messages. I, never, keep more than 10 MB of mail in my Inbox, but prefer to move similar messages in special folders.
And, the path to the Inbox should be that of its location. It seems that you have done many things correctly, but other things are, definitely, wrong.

Netscape 7.1 was released back in June 2003, while 7.2 came out just over a year later in August 2004.

You are of course correct in pointing out that Netscape 7.x is an old and discontinued suite. I would go
further than that to say that it's continued obsolesence makes it increasingly insecure and dangerous.

To the OP . . .
SeaMonkey is the perfect slot in replacement for the old Netscape 7.x suite, as it's a community based
continuation of the classic Mozilla Application Suite that formed the basis of Netscape 7.x suite.

The latest version of SeaMonkey is 2.0.13 ... the newer version 2.1 is currently in Beta. I personally
recommend upgrading from Netscape 7.x to SeaMonkey 2.0.13, then upgrading to 2.1 when it is
eventually finalised. Keep an eye on the SeaMonkey Project's official website for news.

DJGM is, of course, correct in giving the issue dates of the Netscapes. I am wondering where I got those dates, and the best guess was that I saw a belated review of Netscape 7.1(

Please see the header of this thread.

Yes, I have, and I love it - until this calamity occured :)
I am not surprised that you don't see anything.

Well thats why I came here, wishing and hoping for assistance to get out of this mess.
:)
Inside of the Netscape Name window I moved all subfolders of the Inbox to parallell folders (folders at the same level as the Inbox), so that the Inbox no longer had subfolders. Then I navigated in Windows to the path of the large Inbox file and moved it to a separate location to get it out of the way, for now, causing Netscape to create a new Inbox from scratch as expected. That Inbox has been building ever since, as new messages kept a'coming, but none of the 1610 messages received by the new Inbox to date have showed up in the view window on the right hand side.

I should mention that just prior to logging in here today I de-installed Thunderbird that I had installed around the time that my Netscape 7.1 troubles began, thinking that this Thunderbird installation might have something to do with my Netscape 7.1 troubles, but to no avail. Even after compacting the Inbox with only 1610 message, the View panel remains empty.

I should mention that in order to send and receive email in this troubled period, I use a second computer also running Netscape 7.1 which currently does not have access to the files of my primaray computer. I am thinking of moving one of those files over to see if the messages will appear in the Netscape 7.1 View on that second computer.

I just did that.
Copied over one of the Netscape 7.1 files - which no longer displays the indidividual received email messages on computer #1 Netscape 7.1 CK-SillyDog installation - to Computer #2 which has the vanilla Netscape 7.1 installed.

The result is in. All the messages in that transferred file from Computer #1 show up immediately in the View pane of the vanilla Netscape 7.1 on computer #2, which indicates that the file itself is ok.

Something bad has happened to my SillyDog 7.1 installation on computer #1.
Should I just de-install and perhaps install 7.2?

Am I to understand that my Netscape 7.1 email files are compatible with SeaMonkey 2.0.13? Would the procedure be to first install SeaMonkey and then deinstall Netscape 7.1 mail or the other way around?

Yes, they are!

Install SeaMonkey first, then, when you're satisfied that everything is running correctly, and that all your data has been successfully transferred, you can un-install Netscape, if you wish.

Dave.

my Netscape 7.1 email files are compatible with SeaMonkey 2.0.13

When you install Seamonkey, you will have a chance to import the data from Netscape 7.1. Or, if you want to do things the hard way, you can set up Seamonkey, mail accounts and all, and then, with Seamonkey closed, you can copy the files with no extention, such a Inbox, Sent,,etc from the Netscape/Mozilla profile/Mail folder, and paste them in the equivalent folder of the Seamonkey profile. On opening Seamonkey, your folders should appear with all the content (provided, of course, that they are not huge).
This was the way to do things way back when, and still is.
