Flock ends on 26 April 2011

We here at SillyDog701 did not focus on Flock browser, however, Flock came to our attention as the recommended browser to users of Netscape 8 and Netscape 9. In a nutshell, Flock was a Firefox based browser focused on social networking. Flock integrates social networking and media services started with Flickr, del.icio.us, then a number of social websites/services including MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Blogger, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, etc. Late last year, Flock 3 moved from Firefox-engine to Chromium (WebKit).

Unfortunately, Flock is pulling the plugs.

It seems like not just stop supporting after 26th April, but some key features will stop working after that date.

Flock recommends users current Flock users to switch to Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browser.

Users of Flock browser seeking support after 26 April 2011 may find better luck at Mr Jay Garcia's ufaq.org website.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. It had to be one of the dopiest browser interfaces I'd ever seen.

I am not a social networking junkie, so naturally, I did not use Flock.

I liked Flock a lot for it's social networking focus. But now if I want a browser wit that mindset I'll use Rockmelt.

Wasn't Rockmelt started by the guy who started Netscape?

Yup. Marc Andreesen. He's 39 now and his contribution was huge at the time.

So, I wonder what is his source code, what is the engine, etc. I mean, you know, Mac O/S is Unix based, MS-DOS was Unix based, maybe Rockmelt is based on the old NS code, whatever that is, Mosaic?

I am just shooting fish here, I don't really know this stuff except that there is Trident (IE) Webkit (Safari, Chrome), and Gecko (FF & SM). So, what else is there?

RockMelt is built on top of Google Chrome, and as far as I'm aware there are no backend changes, only UI elements added.

So, thanks, that means it is built on Webkit?

Thanks for the link and additional information about RockMelt. I have to say that the RockMelt website contains hardly any descriptions except links for downloading.

Just a reminder for anyone who still uses Flock, the best bet of support place should be Mr Jay Garcia's UFAQ website. Mr Jay Garcia is the leader of Netscape Champion, Mozilla Champion and Flock Champion.
