Initial Impressions of FF 5

Postby James » Sat 25 Jun, 2011 9:34 am

Well...I finally updated my browser like a lot of you. What I'm finding is... it's s-l-o-w. It's slow to load and slow to render pages. Well, perhaps I need to qualify that. I find it slow on my system when compared to Google Chrome or Internet Explorer 9. Both (especially Chrome) are considerably faster than this latest version of FF.

Overall, I'm disappointed but not really surprised. As I mentioned several posts ago elsewhere, I've been weaning myself from Mozilla browsers for several months now and this latest iteration of FF hasn't changed my mind.

I can't use IE9, as I have WinXP, and Google Chrome, which I used to like was a disaster. I reported my problems earlier, and after I cleaned up a virus picked up, somehow, by Chrome, a clean install failed.
As long as 3.6.x is supported, I will keep it. FF5 is a bit faster, under equal conditions, than 3.6.x, but nothing to write home about it. I have switched to Seamonkey, as default, and keep on using it, as long as it is supported.
The concern that all would be lost if Seamonkey crashes is unjustified. I have, yet, to run into a persistent problem with any Mozilla-related browser, and crashes have been very isolated.
My backups are the Firefox and Thunderbird profiles.

Fulvio, I understand completely and applaud your decision. Chrome did not work for you and IE9 is not an option. You have to go with what you're comfortable with and what works best on your computer. For me, that is Chrome. I'm not sure how you picked up a virus with it since it runs basically in a sandbox-like environment but I suppose it's possible. I wish it were different for me just for nostalgia's sake going so far back with Mozilla, but it is what it is. Knowing me, I'll keep returning to FF hoping it will change but my default is definitely Chrome for the foreseeable future. As for T-bird, I haven't used a POP mail client in several years now, using instead webmail based clients (i.e. Google, Yahoo, Hotmail). They all provide safe storage out there and are easily accessible from my phone when I'm on the road. To me, T-bird is like going back to the 90's and yesterday's technology. I would find the same for SeaMonkey. The idea of a suite is just so yesterday BUT I defend your right to use and love it. You take care. :)

My friend and I were discussing browsers speeds. He uses IE(9) and thinks it is fast. He uses it for everything. I basically think that it is slow. I have used it for very little up until recently (below).

I suspect that with any new browser. especially with a new profile, one needs to build up a cache of visited pages before they will open quickly. Now, I might here be showing my naivete and general lack of knowledge. But my friend is a I/T. professional and he agreed.

Now, recently, I assigned to IE my ISP's web mail which I really like. The web mail helps me keep Outlook cleaner. Using IE keeps this process off of Firefox and SeaMonkey which I use for my blogs.

So, if I get an email in IE with a link, I open that link in IE. What I am seeing is that as the links get opened on a repetitive basis, they do open more quickly and IE does not feel as much like a dog.
