Thunderbird 5.0 Message Pane Inaccessible

Postby lfclouisc » Wed 29 Jun, 2011 3:06 pm

I mistakenly upgraded to TB 5 and unfortunately was unable to access the message pane - yes all of my messages were there however I could not "open" the email in the message pane in order to read it. I tried disabling all add-ons which only helped to display the header box with a gray-blue message pane that could not display the body of the message - it was blank. Upon starting in safe mode it acted normally but I was unable to figure out what was causing the issue so I reverted back to 3.1.11. I also did not like the transparent frame border and toolbar. I'm using Windows 7 so if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Thanks,

Lou

I did not know that there was a Thunderbird 5. how did you get it? But, I see that something is going on.
At this point, I can't help you, other than to tell you not to allow automatic updates.

Thanks for your reply! I found out about TB5 via the update service in TB otherwise I wouldn't have known about it either.

Regarding my problem, I think I figured it out! I compared the two profile folders - the one that worked vs. the one that didn't and the one that didn't had a Chrome folder containing a chrome.css file. Once I removed it from the profile folder TB5 reacted normally.

I think I got it. It worked on my desktop pc at work and my laptop. It also worked on my home pc (my main box) as I had hoped it would there as well as I copied these profile folders and the files in them from pc to pc over the years - I guess it is not always a good idea but at least I found a solution.

Lou,
glad that you solved the problem. I was not looking for updates (the setting is checked off0, because I don't like surprises. In fact, I heard, for the first time, that TB had skipped v.4, and had a v.5, which, I think is not final, yet. It is very difficult to learn what is going on, now. But, I had an old profile which worked perfectly well for TB 5.
