Where is Firefox at?

Postby Fulvio » Thu 15 Dec, 2011 7:30 pm

I had to do a Search to find out at which stage Firefox is, because they don't say anymore. My 9.0 is at beta 6, and, there is a 10.0 at the a2 stage. Nobody would know where Firefox is at, with the non-information which is provided.

Good point and I don't mean this to sound inflammatory but permit me to say it. I honestly don't care where FF is anymore. I'm so sick to death of their dumb race to keep up with Chrome in terms of version numbers that I simply don't care. As I mentioned in another thread, I put the thing on auto-update and it can do whatever it likes. I don't know what I have unless I read my user agent string or purposely check the Help About.

I see that Microsoft beginning in January and starting with Brazil and Australia will be auto-updating its IE browser as well. Fine with me. You have the option of opting out and your auto-update will depend upon your OS. Again... I simply don't care. Give me the latest for my OS but don't bother telling me what version it is. I"m not a web developer and I don't need the information. I just need the security of a fully-patched browser so... do it. :)

It was a rhetorical question. In the old days one could tell which beta was which, but not anymore. I saw people reporting that they have a beta1, and others beta6. But, it makes no difference. Why do you think that I stick with Seamonkey? There is sanity, there.
I agree about security, and it is imperative to have it at the OS stage. Of course, after 15 months of failures with any update installation, I, finally, get a six page e-mail from Microsoft, telling me what to check. If you don't hear from me, for a while, I must have messed up.

Well, good luck. I hope it all works out and you're finally able to resolve this ongoing issue you've had, courtesy of Microsoft.

You'll see by my own user agent string that I've reverted to Chrome. Yesterday my computer crashed... three times thanks to Mozilla and Adobe flash. I looked across the room at my wife, contentedly working on her computer and running IE9. I made a decision. I uninstalled FF, TB and SM. Mozilla is gone since I also took down the profiles with the removal of the programs. My computer, Fulvio, is running much better today. It's been snappy and rock steady and I aim to keep it that way. I read my pop mail on Windows Live Mail (which is about 33% of my mail since most comes via webmail accounts). I read one usenet newsgroup on Windows Live Mail as well. I do my browsing on Chrome (whatever version it is... not sure until I look) and/or IE9. And that is it. Whereas at some future point I might be tempted to try TB again, I truly believe my fourteen years with Mozilla has come to a close. I have never understood all the versions of the browser it has going at one time with alphas, betas, two different tracks and then SM thrown into the mix. It's crazy.

Are you saying that with beta versions, you cannot see the version number in the "About Firefox" window or in the Help > Troubleshooting Information tab?

No. I was probably very vague in my post. Sorry.

I was saying that I don't care what the version is and that the only way I honestly know what it is, is to actually check it myself by going to the Help/About information or looking down at the user agent string.

I went on to say that I've finally cut the umbilical cord with Mozilla after all those years of being a faithful user. Whether or not I'll return is uncertain but for the time being it's gone.. profiles and all. And I'm finding my computer to be running so much better with just Chrome.

As for me, About Firefox does not tell me a thing about which beta it is. I don't care, much, either, but it could help if they would not lump all betas under
20100101 Firefox
. Come to think the same Firefox, allegedly of Jan 1st, 2010, has been reported for all Firefoxes, since v.4, I believe. I am reporting, in my signature that I have 9.0 b6, mainly because I have had six updates of the beta,, and I can count to six.
And, also, for me, Firefox has run ok, and Chrome has not.

I have to have Lin help me when it comes to counting past 4  .

Seriously... six betas? And heaven only knows what Chrome is doing in terms of betas. What on earth has happened to these browsers? Don't you find this insane? Six betas? Everyone seems to have lost their credibility in this mad rush to increase the version number at such a break-neck speed. It's just nutty.

That date (20100101) is the date of the Gecko rendering engine, not of Firefox. Apparently, the rendering engine of the browser has not changed since version 4.
