SM 2.12 Impoves password utility

Postby richard mitnick » Thu 06 Sep, 2012 3:00 pm

Well, folks, the truth must be told. I just updated SM to 2.12. Just for fun, I did a blog post for ScienceSprings.
On my way in this post, I found that my biggest gripe about SM, its failure to save certain eight character passwords has been fixed.

SM was my favored browser for blog work because of the way it handled things like graphics, way better than FF.

But in lieu of SM, I started using Opera. I must conclude that for overall usability, Opera still wins, especially for how it opens new tabs without replacing the site in the current window.

But, because of its superiority to FF, it still remains in place on my computers.

I've really taken a liking to IE, Richard. Yeah... I know: IE??? I suppose I'm preparing myself for IE10 which is coming in a couple of months. Our son will be bringing us free copies of Windows 8 and I know that after he installs it there will be an expectation that I try the new browser. And from everything I've read and heard reported, it's really an excellent browser. Anyway... enjoy Opera. It's a little too quirky for me but it is certainly innovative.

Hey, James

You know, a lot of people like IE. My closest colleague uses it almost exclusively. I am sure that if it is properly configured it is just fine. But, it is the configuration that stops me. I mean, out of the box, all default it is awful. So, O.K., set it up. The motto is directly from Sarah Paline(?), "Drill, Baby, Drill". Too much stuff is down too many levels. On FF, SM, Chrome, and Opera, one finds everything "up top" in a Preferences or Settings group. "Advanced" tabs, a coouple, but nothing like IE.

Anyway, good luck with Win 8.

From everything you've told us in the past, your needs are more involved than mine. I simply check my email, check a few news forums to which I subscribe and do a little surfing which occasionally involves banking and shopping. To protect myself I upgraded recently to Norton 360 for only $25 (3 licenses). I feel safe using IE and Norton and besides, I'm very careful about where I go and what I decide to open in terms of emails. In addition, I seldom download so-called "free" programs, knowing that much of this involves hidden hooks. The few "free" programs I've downloaded came from reputable sites.

Seamonkey is a browser that tempts me only because of its connection with and similarites to Netscape, the suite that started my online activity back in 97. But I don't really care for an all-in-one offering anymore so I've pretty much abandonned SM and Opera. I was reading in PC World today (or was it PC Mag... hmmm.. can't remember now) about the latest version of Chrome that literally smokes the rest of the browser field at the expense of some polish and yes... quirkiness. It's another browser that I've had a love-dislike relationship with since its appearance a few years back.

I've set up IE to act exactly like FF: address bar, Lastpass button, WOT button. What more could I expect from a browser? I will say this: there are pages that simply don't render nicely with FF and that never seems to happen with IE. And now with the latest push by MS for increased security from its browser, I'm certan that IE10 will satisfy me completely. That's not to suggest that the other browsers are lacking but rather that it meets my limited needs so I'm fine with it.

Take care.

Fire up FF for this post (LOL).

Check out this video on YouTube introducing the new IE10:

What is WOT button on IE?

I don't think I really need to repeat. I am quite happy with the basic password managers provided by the browsers for less important stuff. I manually typed (or copied in) passwords for serious stuff (from Yojimbo software). I know I am old schooled.

Thanks James.

The WOT seems like a pretty good concept.
