Password for Software Security Device

Postby Pauline » Wed 06 Aug, 2003 7:22 pm

I repeatedly get a pop-up window with: Please enter the master password for the Software Security Device. I am running Netscape 7.1. Stand-alone pc, Win2000. I have never had this message with any previous version of Netscape.

Any suggestions on what to enter? I have tried all codes and nos. on the CD rom and package, and the administrator password for Win2000.

The screen comes up every 4 or 5 minutes and has become terribly annoying.

An email with the answer would be much appreciated!

Pauline,
did you check your Preferences|Privacy and Security|Master Password ? Look at ther settings. I have never been asked for a password, with any Netscape version.

Netescape and Master Password

Postby Pauline » Thu 07 Aug, 2003 12:37 pm

Thanks, but . . . I have tried the preferences route. The only thing which is doable from that menu is to reset the master, which will wipe out all other passwords. That might be the best route, although I could lose something important.

On the other hand, perhaps if I turn off encryption? It is not something I use often.

When websites say you are sending encrypted data to them for security, does that come from my encryption setting?

Like you, I have never been asked for a pw by Netscape before. I am beginning to regret updating to 7.1.

Netscape Security Master Password

Postby Pauline » Thu 07 Aug, 2003 1:44 pm

I have found the answer. What the Netscape Software Security Device screen wants is my ISP logon password. Now I am getting a screen requesting my mail server pw. Also the same. It is still an annoyance, but at least I know what is needed.

Even if Netscape is only asking for your ISP password, it already asked for it when you logged on to the ISP the first time? Did it forget? Why does it keep asking??? I get the same message, and clicking 'Cancel' seems to have no different an effect than entering it and clicking 'OK'.

I don't know, but I don't trust this - it would be interesting to make a note of what pages you happen to be browsing when you are asked for the password...

I have the same problem. I even reset the Mater Password.

I have never had this problem before with other Netscape

Does anyone have a solution. I have to enter my ISP logon
passoword everytime I try to open my- mail program.

Have you checked these settings:

Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Settings | Outgoing Server (SMTP)
Enable: Use name and password
If already enabled, then DISable... see if that helps.

Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Settings
For each news server, go into "Server Settings" and ensure
"Always request authentication when connecting to this server"
is UNchecked

Have any of you contacted your ISP? The only time I've received a password request is when my ISP was doing maintenance.

Netscape asking for master password

Postby clo2004 » Sun 26 Oct, 2003 9:00 pm

I had the same problem (that netscape 7.1 was constantly asking for the master password for hte software security device). For me what had happened was I had added a second mail account and had selected the option to have netscape check the mail on the server every 5 min. I had not selected the option to login when I started Netscape so that what really needed to happen was netscape needed my pop account password. I have no idea why it was asking for the master password. I also don't know what if any thing would happen if I provided the password when requested. I was able to eliminate the constant request for the master password by either logging in to the second mail account (via check messages) or by unselecting the option to check the server every 5 min.

Turn off encyription

Postby teresachardy » Mon 01 Dec, 2003 11:15 pm

Go to Edit > Preferences > Privacy & Security > Passwords and uncheck "Use encryption when storing sensitive data". It worked for me.

Teresa,

Thank you for solving this issue. I unchecked the box: "Use encryption when storing sensitive data" and now I don't have to keep entering my password.....I love you XOXOXOX
