I don't know what the difference is between communicator and netscape. Is it just the name? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Communicator is a program which includes: 1.Navigator, for web surfing.It is equivalent to Internet Explorer. 2.Messenger, for e-mail. 3.Composer to create web pages. Since Netscape in its earlier days up to v.4.08 was available as Navigator only or the other two components, as well, which became known as Communicator, like a nickname. Any of the later versions, including 7.0 are also Communicators, because they have the same components. To call 4.8 Communicator, and 7.0 not is incorrect and confusing, besides, in the later versions of 4, only Communicator is available.
Some people like Antony, the Webmaster here or DJGM, do create Navigator only versions ( and ,you can you use some other mail in place of Messenger).
My suggestion is to keep 4.8 and have 7.0 as well.

I don't strictly agree with that. Officially, Netscape 6.x/7.x are not considered
to be upgrades to Netscape Communicator. If they were as such, they would
most likely replace/overwrite your existing installation of Communicator by
default. To all intents and purposes, Netscape 6.x was a complete rewrite
from the ground up, based on what was an entirely new codebase, and
that made it an entirely new, albeit extremely buggy, product.

On that basis, it would effectively be wrong to refer to Netscape 6.x
and now Netscape 7.x as new versions of Netscape Communicator,
even though both NS6.x/7.x are complete internet software suites
packaged in a very similar way to Netscape Communicator.

All I was saying is that 4.8 and 7.0 are both Communicators, according to the definition which I gave earlier. I did not see that there was any statement to the effect that 7.0 was an upgrade, nor did I imply it.
I guess that my eyes were on the title. As you know,many people refer to any 4.x as Communicator.
