Netscape 6: Address book shortcut and history bookmark

Postby David » Wed 17 Jul, 2002 7:13 pm

I just downloaded Netscape 6. Can I place a shortcut on my desktop to the address book? Also, can I make a bookmark that takes me to the history (Or a similar shortcut in the Netscape GUI)? My last question: After I installed version 6, a folder that 4.7 was using remained: "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator". Version 6 made a folder in the same dsirectory called "Netscape 6", and it contains similar files. Since these two folders seem independant, and since the user profiles folder is outside of these folders, is it ok to delete the 4.7 folder? Could I just delete "Netscape 4.7" in the Add/Remove Programs list? Thanks for any help.

If you look closely, you will see that NS4.7 and NS6 are quite different. If you have any intention of using 4.7, in the future, you should not remove, but if you are totally satisfied with NS6.x, and I definitely am not, you should remove from the Add/Remove. But,hang on to 4.7.
You can make shortcuts to any file you want, by right clicking on the icon and selecting to Send to Desktop. However, since my History is gone every day, and do not keep an address book, I am the wrong guy to ask.

I just wanted to know if removing 4.7 using the Add/Remove programs list would effect my account (Mail, bookmarks, address book, etc.) in any way, if Netscape 6 inherets all that information. Also, I haven't used 6 a whole lot yet, and I don't see anything bad in it in comparison to 4.7 yet (Except maybe how the bookmarks are handled). What don't you like about it? I'd like to know you're opinion so that I can decide whether to coninue using 4.7 or not. (I still need advice on my first subject of shortcuts, though!)

When you remove the program, you do not affect the User profiles which contain Mail, bookmarks and address book. And, you could copy files from the defunct 4.7 files and paste them into the 6.x. It is not as simple as that, but that's the way.
I would not hang around 6.x because it sort of work in progress, and a number of important features have been returned in 7.0pr1. the pr stands for Preview, which is another way of saying, that they are not quite done.
After the final 7 comes out, I may consider removing 4.79. I got plenty of hard drive space, and I like to compare them.
As for the shortcuts, I think that it can be done, but why? Would you want to look at your Address Book when you are offline? But only at the address book or history.? I am stalling because I am not sure, and again, you will have a better chance with 7.

I want to make a shortcut to my history not on the desktop, but in the Netscape GUI, like maybe, for example, as a bookmark in the personal toolbar. I often have to refer back to pages that I haven't bookmarked. Also, the address book I just wanted to use as an address book. I don't understand your question, "Would you want to look at your Address Book when you are offline?". I don't see why not. Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

Yes, just create following shortcut.
Code: Select all
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape 6\netscp6.exe -addressbook

Sorry, I don't know.

Yes. but we don't recommend you remove it right away. you should only do so after you are satisfied with Netscape 6 or 7.
Well, some links might be useful to you...

To answer your three questions,

Yes, through command line it is -addressbook.
No, but if it's a shortcut of some sort you want, Ctrl + H works.
Yes, uninstall through Add/Remove. Nothing will happen to N6.
