Problems attaching pdf to email

Postby mytmo » Fri 17 Oct, 2008 11:13 am

Whenever I try to attach a pdf to an email, it shows up in the body of the email rather than as an attachment. I'm using Adobe Acrobat Professional. How do I fix this?

Maureen - Welcome to SillyDog.

If with an editor you were to look at an email that includes an attachment, you would find that the attachment is just a demarked segment of the entire email. So your statement that " ... it shows up ... " is the key. The 'showing up' is a 'viewing-time' option.

You didn't indicate what email client you are using, but in Thunderbird you can see if you have checked: View > Display Attachments Inline.

Additional note (it works this way for Windows / Thunderbird, anyway) - In either case you should also be able to see the icon that indicates the attachment. It will appear at the bottom of the pane that shows the email. If you don't see it, place the cursor at the bottom of the mail pane (this will be just above the Status panel, if it has been selected). The cursor will become double-arrow-ended; then move the cursor up slightly. The icon will appear. One then can click on the icon to manipulate the attachment as desired.

I think you're right - it's a viewing problem. I'm using Mac Mail, and I'm not sure where the options are to change that. The strange thing is it that sometimes it simply attaches the icon (which is what I want) and other time the whole thing shows up in the body of the text. Any idea how to fix that in Mac Mail?

Mac Mail? Sorry, no.
(Now for a promotional message.) Have you ever tried Thunderbird?
Perhaps our MacFolk can supply a comparison of Mac Mail vs. TB.

Generally speaking, the attachement showing is depending on receiver's email client or receiver's preference. In the case of Mail.app, users have less control on this.

I don't know how to turn this setting off. As for attachements showing as an icon, my guess is that such attachement is not yet ready for "Quick Look" or other preview features.

Thanks for your input. I may have to just live with this. I don't know how it's showing up in other people's mail boxes, but I haven't had any one complain. Just looks annoying.

Not to be a nag, but are you willing to try using Thunderbird?

And while I'm here, I'll put in a plug for Firefox as well.

I know that in the Windows environment that one can use both the Microsoft products and the Mozilla products simultaneously, and I would expect that the same philosophy applies in the Mac OS X arena as well. Hence you can compare them side-by-side.
