Help! I'm using Netscape 4.7. I've just never updated because it was working for me. Today, I logged on to check my e-mail, I downloaded my messages and everything was fine. Went back a few hours later, had to restart my computer (it sometimes freezes on me), logged on to check my e-mail and all of my messages in all the files are gone, vanished. My address book and bookmarks are completely gone too! This is several years of information! I'm baffled as to what happened because I didn't do anything different, change anything in my computer, etc. I haven't made a back-up of these in over a year (stupid mistake). What could have happened? Is there any way to recover what I've lost? I'm not a computer person - don't understand all of the jargon but I can find my way around with help.

I'd be eternally grateful if someone could help me!

Chances are your profile data is still there. Go to your Netscape install directory and then go to /users (not in /communicator). See if your profile data is still there. There will be files for each profile you have.

If it is still there, you have two options:
1) Copy your /users directory to a safe place for now, uninstall Communicator, and then reinstall it. See if it now works.
--OR--
2) This sounds like a good chance for you to upgrade to something else like Mozilla or Netscape. To the best of my knowledge, both of them will import profile data from Communicator in versions 4.5+.

If your profile data isn't there, sorry to say your data is probably lost.

Welcome to the Forum, Michele,

Open Windows Explorer and look here:

C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourusername

Open the file which is your user name, do you see these folders/files:

Mail folder
News folder
bookmark.htm
pab.na2 - Address Book

If you see these files, then all is intact. There should be other files as well, but these are the important ones.
