Migrating Email Folders and Address Book to new computer

Postby katten41 » Fri 12 Nov, 2004 8:46 am

I've purchased a new computer (Windows XP, Home Edition) and want to migrate my email folders and address book to it. My old computer uses Netscape 4.79 as the email program (it has worked great!).

I have a 100 megabyte Zip drive at my disposal to move files from one computer to another.

I assume the new Netscape 7.2 is the best version to install on the computer. How do you suggest I proceed to move my email?

I thank you, any and all, in advance for precise instructions or a referral to a previous posting that deals with the issue.

You might want to take a look at this thread. The sender is asking a different question, but the steps there will have the result that you are asking for.

I did give you a hyperlink in the reply above (the red text indicates a hyperlink in this forum). But, here it is again: http://sillydog.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7518

Steven,

Just getting to the Internet today, and apologize for the delay in answering your questions, which you asked in PM. Thank you for posting on the Forum.

On the old PC:
Export your Address Book as an LDIF file
Open the Address Book, and click on File | Export
Save the ldif file to your Zip disk

Copy your entire Users folder, as suggested in the other thread, to the Zip Disk

Once you have installed Netscape 7.2, create your Mail account.
Exit Netscape 7.2 and Quick Launch (you really don't need Quick Launch)
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to this folder
[tt]C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\pop.yourisp.net[/tt]

NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
To see hidden files:
1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
2. Click the View tab
3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders
4. Disable "Hide File Extensions for Known Files."
5. Click OK.

Now copy the mail files from the Communicator Mail subfolder from the Zip disk
Only copy the files with NO SNM extension. These files contain your mail. Also copy the SBD folders, as they are the subfolders you created, if any.
Paste these files into the pop.yourisp.net folder, and replace the existing files.

Those files are Inbox, Drafts, Templates, Sent, and any SBD folders (subfolders) you may have created. Delete the SNM files in the subfolders before pasting them into the Netscape 7.2 pop.yourisp.net folder.

Please ask any questions you may have before attempting this edit.

Thanks so much. It worked flawlessly. Your precise advice was stellar, as always. Yea!!! I'm onto my computer with the exciting new 7.2.

Many, many thanks.

Steven,

Way to go, and happy that you are pleased with your migration to 7.2. Sorry you had to wait so long, but I absolutely had to be gone most of the day today. I always hate to leave my users stranded but I do have to attend to my real life chores now and then.

Happy browsing,

Ramona
