Using "Send Page..." & "Save As...";

Postby jamworks » Tue 28 Dec, 2004 3:43 pm

I am using Mac 0S 9.1, Netscape Communicator 4.7, and a dial up modem. A while ago, I discovered that I like using Netscape's "Send Page..." feature, which allows e-mailing a web page.

Did I make a mistake to assume that "Send Page..." saves the images on my harddrive? While not connected to the internet, when later opening the files (i.e., in the Netscape Sent folder), the images do not display. If I don't have Netscape set to Work Offline, it tries to dial, sometimes repeatedly.

When I am connected, when opening the files, usually the images do display. I had assumed for a long time that the images were stored on my harddrive along with the rest of the page. But maybe Netscape is actually retrieving the images from the web in order to display them?

I have a similar problem with files created with "Save As...Source". Usually, they do not display the images when opened while I am not connected.

Minor Misunderstandings

Postby goGecko » Wed 29 Dec, 2004 11:01 pm

In Netscape Communicator, file....send page only opens a mail composition window with a link to the webpage. Netscape 7 has the same behavior. In order to use the link, you must be online or the page must be stored in the cache. To find out if a page is in the cache, go to about:cache and search for the filename. However, note that the recipient of the message will not have the website in their cache. The cache is a temporary holding area on your hard drive that stores recently viewed images. An image might be in the cache for a short period of time (assuming that you've visited it before), but it will eventualy be overwritten.

If you use File...Save Page in Netscape Communicator then the pictures will not be saved. In Netscape 7, the pictures would be saved. Note that the cache may make it appear that the pictures are saved in Communicator but the images are not saved on the hard drive.

I would recommend upgrading to Netscape 7 which has a feature of "save complete web page." To download Netscape 7 go to:
http://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape7/e ... c-full.bin

I hope that this has helped you. If you need more help, feel free to ask!

Thanks. Your posting is very helpful, because I never thought about the role of the cache in this situation.

I just experimented with emptying Netscape's cache and -- while unconnected to the internet -- viewing Sent e-mails with which I had used "File...Send Page...".

Apparently, "File...Send Page..." in 4.7 does more than more than just send a link. The HTML text does display when I look at the Sent e-mails this way, but the images do not. And I have to look at these e-mails with Netscape set to offline, or else it keeps trying to dial.

But I also looked at an e-mail bulletin that I am a subscriber to this way. The same thing happens -- the text of the bulletin displays, but not the images. This is a rather shocking thing for me to learn -- that even incoming e-mail bulletins that I want to save are not completely stored on my harddrive somewhere.

Is the feature you described in Netscape 7 similar to Internet Explorer's "Save As...Web Archive" feature?

Perhaps I didn't fully understand what you are trying to do. On an old copy of Communicator, I went to www.yahoo.com and chose File...Send Page. The resulting composer window just showed www.yahoo.com as the body. What steps do you do to send the page? However, if it works for you then that is all that matters. :)

Incoming e-mails are normally saved completely on your hard drive. The cache only applies to web pages viewed through Navigator. It does not affect e-mail or Netscape Messenger. Just to be sure, go to Edit...Preferences....Advanced and ensure that "Automatically load images" is checked.

The feature in Netscape 7 does not work the same way as Internet Explorer's feature while they are similiar. Netscape 7's feature creates a folder with the same name as the HTML file except that the name is amended with files. For example, if you use Netscape 7's feature to fully save a file named "pictures.html" then you would get a folder of images called "pictures files" and "pictures.html." However, it effectively works the same way as Internet Explorer's technique.

I just click Send as with any e-mail.

Go to your Sent folder and look at that e-mail you sent! I'll bet it will display that www.yahoo.com page, without going to the web to get it.

I just went to Edit...Preferences....Advanced to make sure. "Automatically load images..." is checked.

Therefore, I still don't know why, when reviewing e-mails in my Inbox (or in whatever folder I've refiled them into), while not connected, the images do not display. And if I am not working Offline, Netscape keeps trying to dial, as if it wants to go get the images.
