I notice in Windows Explorer that if I look at mail folders and snm files in my wife's account that there is no correlation in size. There are folders that are 500KB in size with an index (snm) file that 750KB and folders that are 10MB that have an index of 100KB. Why would the index of a folder be larger than the contents of a folder?
The size of the SNM files will remain the same, regardless of the size of the Mail folders, i.e., Inbox, Sent, etc. It is much like the Windows Registry, it continues to grow, regardless of how many files are deleted. If the size bothers you, it is quite safe to delete the SNM files, as Netscape will rebuild the file when restarted. You must obviously do this with Netscape closed.
What is the difference between compressing a folder and compacting a folder?
They are one in the same. Compacting the folders, compresses them in size.
