Multiple versions of navigator and communicator...

Postby techrookie » Sun 06 Mar, 2005 3:44 pm

Hi: I currently use Navigator 7.2 and was wondering if I can also have Communicator 4.77 on my computer simultaneously? The reason I ask is that I am taking some online classes from a college and they say that anything above 4.77 is not supported. What does that mean?

Thanks for your help.

The answer is "yes, you may have both installed." Netscape 4.77 is a completely separate program and installs in different directories than Netscape 7.2. Both browsers may, in fact, be opened simultaneously without conflict.

"Not supported" may, if really true, mean a variety of bad things. This could just mean that certain features of Netscape 7.2 are not supported. On the other hand, it could mean that you can not connect with Netscape 7.2 to their content at all.

It seems strange that any college or university would force you to use an essentially obsolete product (although still usable), Netscape 4.x, which, as far as I am aware, is no longer supported by its makers. Netscape 4.80 is the latest 4.x product. Almost all versions of Netscape are available for download here at SillyDog.

Netscape 8 will soon be available, and I am not sure or not if it could conflict with Netscape 4.x since, I believe, that both name their executable the same name.

Thanks for the reply profman.

I can access their site with 7.2, but here is what they said that prompted by question:

AOL provides users with 'Customized' broswers that are incompatible.
Details: WebCT supports only full-featured browsers. Some internet service providers (e.g. America Online or AOL) provide their users with 'Customized' versions of Internet Explorer or Netscape. Because of the way that these browsers use Javascript, they are not compatible with WebCT. WebCT is only compatible with full-featured browsers. We recommend the following:

Netscape version 4.5x to 4.77 (version 6.x not supported)

Internet Explorer (IE) version 5.5 SP2 to 6.0 (SP2)

Once you connect to AOL, minimize your browser and open a new session of the browser and link to your course.

Any thoughts on what this means? I don't use AOL internet service.

In that case, it seems obvious that the college simply hasn't bothered to test WebCT with versions of Netscape later than 4.77.
Modern browsers such as Netscape 7.x, Mozilla, and Mozilla Firefox are undoubtedly full-featured, and in my experience they may indeed work fine on WebCT, regardless of whether or not they are officially supported or recommended.

I, more or less, agree with Andrew T.. Netscape made a big leap from Netscape 4.x to Netscape 6+, and many people gave up on Netscape at this point. Many sites, because of this, do not say anything about Netscape after version 4.x.

I would recommend, to be safe, using your current version of Internet Explorer just to access WebCT material. If you are adventurous, you could try using Netscape 7.2, Mozilla 1.7.5, or Firefox 1.0 to access WebCT material and see how it works. They are all full-featured browsers.

The references to AOL simply do not apply to you. It seems to say that some customized versions of IE or Netscape are not "full-featured." It also seems to say to open a new window when accessing WebCT from AOL.

My university uses WebCT, but I, unfortunately, have stayed away from it use since I already have my hands full with labs and Powerpoint presentations. I would, if I used WebCT, be tempted to use my favorite version of Mozilla to access it, but I would, if that failed, fall back to using Internet Explorer. Everybody seems to write for IE.

I don't know where you got all this information... My school uses WebCT as well, and according to the official WebCT browser tuneup, these (http://www.webct.com/tuneup/viewpage?na ... owsers_win) browsers are all supported on Windows.

So as you can see, in the latest Campus Edition, Netscape 7.1 and 7.0 are both supported, as is Mozilla 1.6.

Windows: Stop complaining about it; stop using it.
