Apple unveiled new 27-inch LED Cinema Display

Apple® today unveiled a new 27-inch LED Cinema Display with stunning 2560 x 1440 resolution and 60 percent more screen real estate than the 24-inch LED Cinema Display. Featuring a built-in iSight® video camera, microphone and speakers, powered USB 2.0 hub, and universal MagSafe® connector, the new LED Cinema Display is an ideal companion for the MacBook® family or a Mac® desktop, and is available for US$999.

The new, larger 27-inch LED Cinema Display features a beautiful 16:9 edge-to-edge glass display on an aluminum stand with an adjustable hinge that makes tilting the display almost effortless. The LED Cinema Display has vivid colors and exceptionally high contrast and uses a premium display technology called in-plane switching (IPS) to provide a brilliant image across an ultra wide 178 degree viewing angle.

The new LED Cinema Display now includes a new ambient light sensor which automatically adjusts the display brightness based on external lighting conditions and uses only as much energy as necessary to provide an optimum viewing experience.

The new LED Cinema Display will be available in September through the Apple Online Store, Apple Retail Stores and Apple Authorized Resellers for a suggested retail price of US$999. The LED Cinema Display requires a Mac with Mini DisplayPort.

Apple announced 24-inch LED Cinema Display in October 2008, and available for sale from November 2008 with initial price of US$899. The 24-inch LED Cinema Display is now available for US$799.

The 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display has native resolution of 2560-by-1600 pixels (16:10 ratio).

Well, no Australian price yet.

Apple wrote:International pricing will be made available at time of launch.

I have a feeling that this upcoming 27-inch LED Cinema Display will be much cheaper than the price of 30-inch Cinema HD Display.

A dismay news to some of our Apple-haters.
Apple's 27-inch LED Cinema Display (US$999) is CHEAPER than Dell's 27-inch offering (UltraSharp U2711, US$1099), according to this 9 to 5 Mac article.

The difference being that those monitors are only 1920x1080, as opposed to 2560x1440, and use cheap TN panels (poor viewing angles, bad colour reproduction etc) as opposed to the high quality IPS panels used in the Apple (and the Dell, FWIW), 27" monitors. With monitors you certainly get what you pay for.

What I don't like is that this monitor is glossy. A matte finish is much preferable IMO, I hate seeing my reflection in the monitor.

It is not that bad to be honest, quite hard to see my own reflection while my iPad is on. Of course, it is a nice black mirror when the display is off.
Otherwise, don't put the light on your face.

The Dell one is ten dollars more, and it works with any platform you throw at it. Be it Linux, Windows or Mac. Apple's is limited to Mac only, which is really, really annoying.

That is not exactly true.

The Apple LED Cinema Display does require Mini DisplayPort, and Apple licenses the Mini DisplayPort connector with no fee. In the PC market, Wikipedia noted some PC notebooks do have Mini DisplayPort.

Further, even back when Apple Cinema Display that required ADC connector (such as one photoed below), all Apple Cinema Displays work well with PC (with converters or directly), although they were not targeting PC markets.

Excuse me if this seems prude, but if I am paying $999 for a monitor, it shouldn't need a special connector.

It's odd that the U2711 is $1099 USD yet only $999 AUD as of when I posted this message.

The main advantage the Dell monitor has, IMO, is all the different inputs (nearly as many as my 3008WFP).

CONNECTIVITY
High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI)
2 Digital Visual Interface connectors (DVI-D) with HDCP
DisplayPort (DP)
Video Graphics Array (VGA)
Component Video
Composite Video

1 USB 2.0 upstream port
4 USB 2.0 downstream ports
8 in 1 Media reader
DC power connector for Dell Soundbar

You can connect virtually anything to the thing. From an ancient VCR, to a games console to a computer. :)

And you don't need something proprietary in order to do it.

After using Apple 27-inch LED Cinema Display, my comment: it is really a beauty.

The design is excellent, although it is glossy display, colour is much more vivid than the 24-inch iMac's display. And to be honest, the reflection is not that bad.
