wondering most computers don't come with Nvidia chipsets?

Postby Antony » Wed 11 Aug, 2010 2:52 am

Well, there is a bit of history between Intel and Nvida.

Fortune spoke with Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO of Nvidia to talk about the breach of contract lawsuit with Intel that is keeping the two 'partners' from working together.

Once aware of Intel's position, no computer [Apple included] maker would risk buying Nvidia chipsets, Huang maintains. He stopped vying for new chipset business in late 2009. (Intel maintains Nvidia pulled out because it recognized that chipsets were becoming obsolete.) Huang now wants Intel stripped of its license to Nvidia's portfolio of fundamental patents on graphics and parallel computing technologies -- the case that goes to trial in December.

The legal lawsuit between Nvidia and Intel has been ongoing for some time now. Back in 2004 Intel signed an agreement with Nvidia. Intel gained access to Nvidia's portfolio of graphics patents while Nvidia was granted an Intel chipset license. Fast forward to 2008 and the dispute started up. Basically, Intel is saying that Nvidia's chipset license only covers the older Front-Side Bus (FSB) interface. That means that, according to Intel, they cannot make chipsets that use either QPI (Quickpath) or DMI which are the replacements for the FSB used on the Core i3/i5/i7. Nvidia says that this is untrue and that the chipset license covers the FSB as well as the QPI or DMI interfaces (as well as anything new that Intel introduces in the future). So now they're both suing each other and neither side seems to want to give up on this issue.

thank you for filling in the story. I obviously did not follow the story from the early days.
