Amazon announces Kindle Fire tablet

Postby Antony » Wed 28 Sep, 2011 8:46 pm

Amazon has announced a new multimedia tablet - Kindle Fire.

The Kindle Fire is a 7-inch colour display tablet with no camera and no 3G/GPS built in. It is thicker than iPad 2 (11.4mm compared to iPad 2's 8.8mm) and weights only 414 g. Perhaps, the killing feature is the price tag: US$199. For the reference, the recommended retail price for iPad 2 starts at just US$499.

Kindle Fire supports up to two-finger touch at once and runs on a forked Android OS.

If you are just into e-readers, Amazon also have new line of Kindles:
the Kindle (black and white non-touchscreen) for US$79,
the Kindle touch (black and white touchscreen) for US$99,
and Kindle touch 3G for US$ 149.

You can pre-order Kindle FireImage here. Kindle Fire will be available on 21 November 2011.

I find the long-awaited Kindles a bit of a disappointment. The lack of 3G is a deal breaker as far as I'm concerned. My wife and I have Kindle 2's and we love them. One of the reasons is we can be anywhere and still download books; if our cell phones work our Kindles work. I won't buy the newer models UNTIL they have 3G and a much better app support system. Our ipad2 will remain our tablet of choice and our Kindle 2 the preferred e-reader.

I have a feeling that 3G version of Kindle Fire won't be long.

The lack of 3G doesn't bother me at all. My phone has WiFi hotspot capability built in, so any tablet could simply share my phone's internet connection. Great price, I'm really impressed. :D

Apple says Amazon's Kindle Fire is a good thing:
Apple bosses are taking a positive view of the newest entrant to the tablet PC market, rather than feeling challenged by it, according to a report.

Business Insider reports that Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes met with Apple CEO Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer, both of whom believe that the Kindle Fire will prove disruptive among the Android tablet market.

Amazon Kindle (not the Fire) is available in Australia, even in Woolworths supermarkets.
