Bye bye Zune

Postby Antony » Tue 04 Oct, 2011 7:32 am

Microsoft stated that Microsoft will “no longer be producing Zune players” in its Zune support webpage.

Microsoft stated that the focus will be Windows Phone, which will run all features of Zune.

Microsoft introduced Zune to compete with Apple's iPod in 2006 (old thread and this one). Feature-wise speaking, Zune can do more than Apple's popular iPod. According to Electronista, Zune never got over 2% market share in the US.

Zune will be remembered and loved.

It was an elegant device and my wife and I both own them. It's too bad that it was never given a chance by the public. Oh well. I wonder now about the Zune brand. What will replace it? Paul Thurrott's guess is that it will be replaced b X-box so we shall see. I know that our Windows Phone 7 now takes over all the music and podcasts formerly covered by the Zune but in truth... I STILL like my Zune. Call me someone who refuses to march with the crowd... call me a fool... I'm my own person and the Zune was a great device.

It's honestly been so long since I've seen or heard a Zune mentioned that I figured Microsoft had axed it much earlier. The fact that it's a single-function device that doesn't interoperate well with other Microsoft products, or resemble any recent UI out of Redmond for that matter, doesn't really make it a good contender in the MS product lineup.

Either way, I do know a very small few people who swore by the Zune, considering it superior to any other MP3 player on the market. Now that phones generally serve double-duty as MP3 players, though, I'd assume they've either gone on to Windows Phone 7 or jumped ship to Android by now.

I have four 120 gig Zunes: Classical, Jazz, Pop, Video. I took a look to see about acquiring a couple brand new ones as back ups. They are available, new, at Amazon and, new on Ebay.

My four that I own I paid between US$175 and US$199.

What I saw now, with MSFT out of the picture, is, brand new, as much as $450 at Amazon and on Ebay. So, I think, that shows the quality of the device.

Microsoft didn't really help themselves with the Zune. They never even released the damn thing here. Apple essentially owns the MP3 player market here, aside from the odd Creative or Sandisk player.

I know. Microsoft had no real marketing plan for the thing. And you know... I have one and Lin has two and we love them. They really are very elegant devices but they had no chance from the get-go.

Stupid marketing. Really stupid.
