Why no ALT tag?

Postby Markalark » Tue 29 Oct, 2002 2:03 am

Does anyone know why NS7 will not show ALT tag text on image rollover like every other browser? I realize that the TITLE tag can now be used for this purpose and the ALT tag was originally meant for non-image browsing. Is this the just the wave of the future? Perhaps a setting to enable this would be nice.

NS7 does not show a tooltip due to the the ALT tooltip being nonstandard HTML. To achieve the same effect, use the TITLE tag. As far as I can tell, Netscape added the tooltip when they ruled the market. Microsoft picked it up later.

Actually, the reason for that behaviour is that ALT wasn't designed for that use. TITLE was.

So if I am writing code for XHTML1.0 Standard Compliance which one should I use or should I use both?

Use ALT at least, as it is required.
Also use TITLE if you want to provide extra "interactive/help" for the visitors, but remember, don't use TITLE in every IMG, very annoy.

If you want a tooltip on a mouseover, always use both.

It always amazes me how quickly you reply on this forum :)

Thanks for this. I think that as all my images have a reason to be there
then I will use both (Antony, how does this annoy?). I don't add images
for no reason, at least not on my company web site.

There are some people who have rows of images, and you'd better keep your mouse pointer somewhere outside the browser window, because too many tooltips too read.
Again, only use tooltips when necessary.
Design hint: You don't need to have same text for ALT and TITLE. You should consider using shorten version of text for ALT because for text only browsers, only ALT will be used.

Also, the text for TITLE may not be applicable when viewing the page without images, or the text for ALT may not be applicable when viewing the page with images (when displayed by those broken browsers that display tooltips for it).
