Green Links -- What Are They??

Postby ve6tp » Mon 29 Jul, 2002 2:36 pm

Hi:

I have recently got into HTML and Web designing. In dicussion with another individual, he asked me to check out his web site and give him my suggestions. I used both Netscape 7.49 and I.E. 6.0 as my browsers.

On his web site, he had menus and other areas that had a black background and the writing on them was in blue fonts, very difficult to read. So I suggested he use a different color fonts such as red or white, one that you could see against a black background. He was very upset with me and said "you are using very, very outdated browsers that do not support green links".

First, what are "green links". Secondly how or what do I do with my browsers to accommoate this need? Is it a plug-in or what? Secondly, isn't Netscape 4.79 and I.E. v 6.0 the latest versions?

Thanks for your time and help.

Please give us an URL of that example, otherwise I don't think we understand what you prefer to.

"Green Links" never heard of it.
Links what would change their colours to green?

I was chuckling when I said to myself:environmentally sound. And,yes, they are plus some rather leftist ones as well. And, they are green in color.
NS4.79, which is the latest and possibly last of the 4.x series, works fine with the green links which I saw.
Of course, Netscape is embarked in a new project which started with 6.0, and NS6.2.3 is the latest of the bunch. They are starting with the 7 series, and NS7.0 is out in what I call a superbeta(i.e. really good).
Some people get very hyper, and call 6.2.3 very old. To me 4.79 is still the standard, and a later browser may not render as well, if not up to code. So, ask him what he means by " green links". Perhaps he want to use green on black. You can tell him what I do with such illegible pages.
If the title warrants, I print in black and white, so that I can read them.
There ought to be a law against text on black background.
Take a look at: http://www.indianz.com a Native American web site. His page should be like that, alternating white and yelllow on black!

Green Links

Postby ve6tp » Mon 29 Jul, 2002 9:46 pm

Hi Fulvio and Antony:

Thanks to both of you for responding.

Antony, the site he gave was:
http://www.sphosting.com/classicgames/
(I don't think much of the site by the way).

When I use my netscape 4.79 it show blue fonts on a black background. He says my browser is not current and that the font should show up as green?? I think he has the problem. I went to the URL that Fulvio gave me and the font shows up perfectly, so I think my browser is working fine.

But.... using the above URL which does not work on my Netscape, does work if I use I.E 6.0 or NETSCAPE 7.0, with no problem.

I can't figure this one out. Again, my Netscape 4.79 worked with the URL that Fulvio gave me but not the above URL.

Fulvio, can you tell me... is this a plug-in sort of thing or is it provided within the program and automatically installed when I installed the program?

Thanks fellas. I appreciate any info you can give me.

Regards,
Tru

It works with my NS4.79. Check if you have file np32dsw.dll in the plugins folder of the Program. It is a Macromedia Shockwave8.5 plugin.
As for the green stuff,I did a Google search.

Your "classicgames" site comes up with white and green text on black background when I load it using NS6.1 and Win98SE.

I find it tiring to read though - much less eye-friendly than black on white (or pale grey or any pale pastel colour).

And the Indianz site is just as offputting for me.

Suggest you tell your 'friend' the site should be friendly to the viewer - not the other way around . . .

Most HTML editors, including Mozilla Composer allow you to define the colour of your link text on web pages.

Tru,
So the "green links" simply refers to links in green colour!
(Then why would apples in glue colour called?)

All right, back to topic. I can see the links in Green colour in Netscape 7 PR1, but can't see anything in Netscape 4.79 just black background.
If you see the blue fonts instead, make sure you have CSS on, because when I checked the code, it uses CSS and the annoy mouse capture (JavaScript) to disable mouse clicks.

Green Lilnks

Postby ve6p » Tue 30 Jul, 2002 8:31 pm

Hi Fulvio and Antony:

Thanks again to both of you for replying to my post.

Antony, I think you have answered my question. This site can not be viewed using Netscape 4.79 and I believe it's because it is not coded for that browser. I just tried it again, and I can't even get the site to download now if use 4.79

Since I can view the site Fulvio gave with no problem, and it uses CCS, I'll chalk it up to the page coding and assume my 4.79 is working just fine.

By the way, yes, I do have the plug-in for Shockwave 8.5 showing on my "Plug-in" list.

Antony, you bring up another point. In your last reply, you say "make sure you have CSS on" and I'm not sure exactly what you mean here. Is there an option with 4.79 to "turn" CCS on or off? I see nothing in the "Preferences" so maybe you could tell me where this option is? Thanks so much.

Best Regards to you both.

Regards,
Tru

Tru,
It means "Style Sheets" in other words. Edit | Preference | Advanced (in Netscape 4.7x). By default it is on.

Antony:

Terrific. Thanks so much. I wasn't aware of this option and you were right of course, it was set by default.

Still if someone says they are having a problem viewing any web site that is using this format, I will at least have a plausible suggetion.

It seems I can't stop finding things to learn. It's either browsers or designing web pages wth HTML. Next will be learning CSS I guess.

Thank you again Antony.
