SuSE Linux 9.1

Postby Edward » Fri 14 May, 2004 7:34 pm

Has anyone purchased/downloaded/installed SuSE Linux 9.1?

I have read mixed reviews online, and as it comes with only one CD as opposed to the three CD's that 8.2 and 9.0 came with, I'm interested in learning what 9.1 does not include this time around.

One CD, according to this review.

According to this press release from SuSE, 9.1 Professional comes with five CD's, and 9.1 Personal comes with two CD's, one is the installation CD, the other is one where it can be run right from the CD to try it out first without installing to the hard drive.

From a review I read in Linux Format magazine, the Personal Edition of SUSE Linux 9.1 actually
does away with GNOME 2.4.x, and has KDE 3.2.x as the only choice of desktop environment.

So much for the rumours that Novell might make GNOME the default desktop GUI in SUSE 9.1,
and leave the "traditional" SUSE Linux default desktop choice of KDE, on the GUI backburner!

What I intend to do (sometime within the next few weeks) is purchase the full boxed version
of SUSE 9.1 Personal Edition, install it, then obtain the Professional Edition on DVD from
a private seller on eBay. That'll probably cost up to a sum of just short of UK£30 . . .

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

I could not locate the review at that web site.

But in any event, I am surprised to hear this about Gnome, since it was closely allied with Ximian (which Novell also acquired). I would have expected SuSE to tilt more towards Gnome as a result of this, but I guess not...

The review isn't on the website. It's published in the latest edition of the magazine only . . .

I'm glad they went with KDE as the default GUI, as I prefer that to GNOME, but eitherway I'm
surprised (and slightly disappointed) that GNOME has been omitted from the Personal Edition.

Um...I think the reviewer forgot to check this page. According to this, 9.1 Personal includes Gnome 2.4.

Hmmm, so it is . . . !

Ah, I'll bet new users not already running SUSE Linux will have to go to the custom package
selection to install GNOME, and that it won't be included within the default install settings.

Eitherway, it'll be quite a squeeze to get both KDE and GNOME onto one Linux install CD.
I bet that quite a few other packages have been omitted altogether. Mind you, it is worth
bearing in mind that SUSE 9.1 Personal, is about £10 cheaper than SUSE 9.0 Personal.

With both 8.2 and 9.0, Gnome did not install by default, it had to be installed separately afterwards.

I've seen the LiveCD of SuSE 9.1 run on Pentium and 686-class PC's, and apart from the 2.6 kernel, redesign of the UI (shortened and centered taskbar, default colors and fonts) and updated software components, it looks the same as 9.0.

Is it really worth the upgrade?
