Mac OS X and FreeBSD

Postby Antony » Sun 14 Mar, 2004 7:14 am

Finally, I installed FreeBSD 5.2.1 on Mac OS X :jaguar:
FreeBSD 5.2.1 on Virtual PC 6.1 under Mac OS X 10.2.8. The problem, XFree86 does not work. I think I need to check if I installed all necessarily packages.

Mac OS X is actually base on Darwin, a version of UNIX based on BSD 4.4 Lite, FreeBSD, NetBSD, and the Mach microkernel. And again, UNIX is not Linux.

FreeBSD is not a Linux distro. It's actually a variant of UNIX. Meanwhile, Linux is a UNIX clone.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

Thanks DJGM, but I never said FreeBSD is Linux.

FreeBSD on Mac, now working!

Finally, I got XFree running on FreeBSD 5.2.1. FreeBSD 5.2.1 was installed under Virtual PC 6 for Mac.

What was the problem? I did not configure the video card, the monitor, and the screen :(
I thought I did.

Well, running anything under Virtual PC is slow, particularly my G4 is slow.

With the new PowerMac G4 (dual 1.42). As reported in Virtual PC for Mac performance thread. The speed running in new Mac is a lot faster than the old Mac. Of course with minimum eye candy effects, the FreeBSD is even smoother. :-)

Note, this thread is split from How to install Linux under Virtual PC.
