Uninstall Redhat linux

Postby djv1 » Tue 25 May, 2004 11:03 am

I have red hat linux installed on my P3 with 800mhz and 384mb of ram. I also have windows 98SE installed on this computer. Partioned hard drive 5GB per software. I wanted to get rid of red hat linux and install another OS onto it but I'm not sure how, does any one have any ideas?

thanks

Get a program called Partition Magic. This will identify and display all partitions on your HDD,
and allow you to blitz the ones you no longer want. Once you've deleted the RedHat Linux
partitions, you can then re-allocate and re-format the freed up space on your HDD to
either prepare it for the installation of another operating system, or to reallocate
the space to existing OSes you have currently installed on your PC.

Partition Magic is generally a safe program to use, with a very intuitive user interface, that
lets you safely create, resize and remove any HDD partitions, and it will always ask you to
confirm your actions before it actually performs any partitioning, but it's always better
to be safe than sorry, so do make sure you back up all of your important data, in
case you accidentally delete any HDD partitions you wanted to keep.

I suppose you could always use FDISK from Win98 to delete your Linux partition and format it as FAT.

Since you have to pay for Partition Magic, I don't really want to buy it just to use it one time. I have another program called Ranish Partion. Does anyone know how to use this?

Do the following:

 Create a Windows 98 boot floppy (You can do this in Add/Remove programs)

 Boot with this floppy disk (Check to make sure your A: is set to boot before C: in the BIOS)

 at the command prompt run 'fdisk' and delete all non MS-DOS partitions, create one large MS-DOS parition with the remaining space

 Restart your computer, with the floppy disk still in.

 At the command prompt, type 'fdisk /mbr'

 Remove the floppy and reboot into Windows.

 Find the new drive you created in FDISK and format it as FAT32

I did everything you said, except for this.
 Find the new drive you created in FDISK and format it as FAT32

for the simple reason that I couldn't, the disk drive did not show up!!

BTW: there is a 10gb hard disk on this computer.

 Boot from the the floppy disk with NO cd rom support.

 Run FDISK

 Make sure that there are two partitions in FDISK, the main one with Windows on it, and another one that should be blank. If you have only one partition, use the empty space and create another partition using all free space.

 Quit fdisk, reboot from the boot floppy again (be sure to choose no cdrom support)

 Try to access your C drive with the C: command, run DIR, and ensure that your C drive is there, with the WINDOWS directory and all that.

 Next try to access your D drive - you should get an error that the drive is not ready, or something like that. If you get no error, and the D:\> prompt appears, run 'dir' and ensure it is blank.

 Type the following: 'Format D:', this should format the new partition in dos, it'll likely take around five minutes.

 Reboot into Windows, and the drive should be there. There is no need to format the drive in Windows, since we already did that in DOS.

(Usually your D and E drive would be your CD/DVD drives, but since we had no cd-rom support in DOS, it simply assigned that letter to the new parition, temporarily.)
