computers in a Homegroup must be Win7. So for a mixed Windows network one must use a Workgoup. (Unless one is in a Domain, which you aren't.)
2. I don't believe that the case (upper/lower) of the workgroup name is significant, based upon XP experience. (In XP, all letters are converted to upper case anyway. I don't have Vista or 7 available right now to test with.)

4. You're right - it should
work. As you'll recall, sometimes it is necessary to humor Windows a bit by resetting options (turning them off), and then setting them again. This can clear recalcitrant Registry values. An intervening Restart may be insurance.
