My Experiences with Chrome 17

Postby Mandrake » Tue 14 Feb, 2012 3:08 am

So, as I detailed in the UA string testing thread, I decided to give Chrome 17 a trial as my main browser. I removed the shortcuts to Firefox from my PC, and set Chrome as the default browser. I'm heavily entrenched in ways as a Firefox user, having used the browser since well before version 1 was released. Before Firefox I was a big fan of Mozilla, so clearly I figured I'd find this difficult.

But overall, I have to admit that I've liked Chrome quite a lot. The main two extensions I rely on: Adblock Plus and Ghostery, are both available for Chrome so I had no issues in that department. About my only gripe is the tabs on the top, this is not something I'm used to. I'll become accustomed to it, in due course. On the positive side, Chrome feels noticeably faster than Firefox 10 on my 100Mbps internet connection. I also love the fact that Chrome has it's own PDF viewer. Adobe Reader is slow and sluggish, even on my modern Core i7 PC. I've also seemed to have less issues with Flash than under Firefox, though I'm not sure as to why this is.

I plan to continue using Chrome for the time being. My project over the next couple of days will be to find a Chrome download manager like DownThemAll! for Firefox, so I'll see how that goes.

We both go back the same distance with Mozilla it would appear (in my case, back to Netscape 3.0 Gold). I also would struggle to break free from Mozilla as toublesome as I sometimes find it. And there is no question but that Chrome is faster than Firefox and Seamonkey. The tabs at the top are now the default position for Firefox as well so I must be misunderstanding you. I know that at one time the tabs were in a downward pointing position and when they first turned them around to face upwards on the screen, it came as a shock to me. But then after a while it looked more natural... like real tabs in a file folder.

Anyway, I'm leaning very heavily on joining you but first I want to see a complete week's worth of testing.

I've been using Safari since it first came out. Recently, I started to use Chrome more and more. Apart from the rendering engine (and to most average end users, who cares about the underneath engine?). I quite like the interface and the way how user interact with Chrome.

I am still not used to the tabs on the very top. I understand it could save the screen estate, however, it makes me difficult to drag windows around.

Well, my experiment with Chrome is over. It's a fine browser and works well, I just happen to have a slight preference to Firefox. I found that Chrome that with further use, Chrome seemed faster in some ways, but not quite as fast as Firefox 10 in other ways.

I really like the integrated PDF reader in Chrome, I think that's the feature I'd most like to see in Firefox. :)

I knew it. Once a Mozilla fan, always a Mozilla fan, eh?! LOL

Seriously, I have tried (for upwards of close to a month at a stretch) to make the switch, but in the end I always come back to Firefox. For me, FF is not faster but it's more comfortable... more familiar... and in the end, that's all that really matters.

Thanks for sharing your experiment with us, Mandrake.

I like Chrome, but, not enough to replace my Mozilla products. I, pretty much go according to Secunia PSI, not allowing automatic updates, any more than than I allow automatic updates for Mozilla products.
Today, I ran into a first with Chrome. It checked for updates, and then it proceeded to install, going on forever. Eventually, it quit giving me an error 7, "update not available. What the heck is it doing?

I renabled the auto-updates, and Chromes seems to have updated itself. Pretty much like the ornery Firefox, which goes through the updates motions, and then tells me that I need to download the full installer. Maybe, Chrome might have installed, have it downloaded the full installer.
