It's worth noting that the link you gave, Antony, is only for x86. SP1 for Vista x64 is available here.

I ran with SP1 since I installed Vista about a month ago. I've had zero troubles or performance issues with Vista, which makes for a VERY nice change from last year.

Hey Antony-

Thanks for the link. I had a driver problem vis SP1, so I did not see it in Windows Update. I did find a list of mostly audio drivers that are problematic.

But this does not mean that one can not do the install from the file at the link you gave. That is what I did, several others had also recommended it, including MVP's at the Vista Community site, and a MSFT Tech with whom I did a freebie online chat.

There is definitely some advice to do the install in Safe Mode. Apparently A/V does not play nice yet with Vista.

But, all in all, pretty simple.

I cannot speak to speed improvements, because my two 2.5 gig CPU Core 2 Duo Vista Machines with 633 FSB and 2 gigs of DRAM replaced old PIII's, with 1 gig CPU's and 512 mb DRAM. So, you know, to me, it's like flying, like going from serial to USB. Egadc, my machines are already obsolete. FSB's are up to 1033 or more, and CPU's are now pretty standard at quads.

I hope you are ready for Autumn, we hardly had a Winter and Spring is about to burst upon us.

Vista Service Pack 1

Postby MagicFalcon007 » Mon 13 Apr, 2009 1:43 pm

I just recently bought a new laptop with Windows Vista SP1 and so far I love it. I haven't had any problems with it. When I installed Vista on my old laptop, I had nothing but problems. It would boot up, but after the Vista logo appeared, the screen would go black and the log-in screen would never appear. I think it had something to do with graphics card that was installed. Also my old laptop had only 512 MB RAM so Vista ran very slowly. Word of warning: Never install Vista on a computer with 512 MB RAM.
