Decent WMP alternative?

Postby stoperror » Thu 26 Mar, 2009 5:38 pm

I've been using WMP for a pretty long time (since 6.x came out actually), and though I like WMP 11 (and WMP 12 is pretty cool too), I'm looking for a WMP alternative. That is it has a decent media library, and plays MP3 & the occasional WMA file. Video support is an option, as I usually watch videos in VLC.

I like Songbird. http://www.songbirdnest.com/

iTunes (though, it will force you to convert your WMA's to MP# or AAC). http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

WinAmp, is nice. http://www.winamp.com/ Gotten much better than the last time I remember using it.

Banshee (what I use) with the aid of Mono: http://banshee-project.org/ http://www.go-mono.com/mono-downloads/download.html
(I believe it installs on Windows.)

That's all I know of off the top of my head.

While I was on Linux, I started using Xbox Media Center (on an Xbox) at home and aTunes elsewhere. Admittedly I liked the former better, as it handled the library and playlists a bit more like Windows Media Player did, but that's not to say that Songbird was bad.

aTunes is written in Java, so it'll run on Windows as well as Linux. You can take a look over at the aTunes website if you want to do some more research.

Tried Songbird, was pretty slow, but otherwise decent (a contender!).
Tried WinAmp. Didn't like it that much.
Didn't try Banshee, as I don't want to have to install Mono on Windows.
Never heard of aTunes, so I might take it for a spin.
Of course I could take foobar2000 for a spin.
And finally, iTunes. I really don't care that it'd convert my WMA's to MP3's, actually I'd like that. Might take that for a spin.

It looks like you are on a Windows machine.

I had iTunes for a short time. It disabled my DVD writer, I had to clean out high and low filters it put in my Registry.

I'll stick with WMP, then.

Some sites are written for WMP, and it is not so simple to play such music with any other player. Winamp is my default player, and it does a great job of burning or ripping CDs. My computer cannot burn DVDs, so I would not know.
I never use WMP to burn and rip CDs. But, it works very easily with sites created for it. Winamp requires a bit more thinking. There are some decent players only (tell how if not so) like Songbird (too big, fat and slow), or aTunes. I used to like iTunes, but the more I use it, the less I understand it.
The newest Real Players have become contenders, but they work best only in the Premium version.
