Microsoft Surface, the iPad killer!

Postby Antony » Mon 18 Jun, 2012 10:28 pm

Microsoft unveiled its Surface Tablet today.

Apart from a tablet, Microsoft Surface features a 3mm thin Touch Cover that works as a keyboard. Adding that to 9.3 thickness of the tablet itself, the full package would be just 12.3mm total.

There are two versions of Surface available, running Windows RT or Windows 8 Pro on an ARM processor in a magnesium alloy case.

Without a doubt, this Microsoft Surface would automatically receive Don's and many Microsoft die hard supporters' thumb of approval despite the fact many of those hated “tablet” idea when Apple's iPad first surfaced in 2010.

I've been watching the Microsoft Surface keynote event, and it looks like an impressive product lineup, but
the presentation lacked any information about pricing ... a contrast to similar keynote events from Apple.

If these are to be seen as the iPad killer, then Microsoft had better release them internationally, otherwise
they are potentially in danger of suffering the same fate as the Zune player. That, as I recall, was labelled
as an iPod killer, but failed miserably to live up to this due to Microsoft stubbornly refusing to make it
officially available internationally. Unsurprisingly, it was trounced by the iPod as a result.

Without a doubt, the upcoming Microsoft Surface would be the iPad killer! Plenty of Microsoft die-hard fans have trust in Microsoft.

Following the Surface announcement, Microsoft's shares upped almost 3%. The market agreed with Microsoft, and was a delightful news to all Microsoft's die-hard fans.

Aside from the Xbox 360 and Microsoft's peripherals (mice, keyboards...) Microsoft haven't seem to have had much success with their hardware sales. The Zune, the Kin etc didn't fare too well at all. As DJGM mentions, the Zune was never even released here. :o

Let's not count them out just yet. Competition is good and Apple needs a competing tablet.

That's one of the many privileges Don has been enjoying being an American and lives in the advanced United States of America.

Exactly.

Plus, we all know that there are many people love tablets but simply hate Apple, I can even name a few. They need a strong company competing with Apple.

I am guessing that Mozilla will cancel their recently revealed Junior Firefox (for iPad) plan. Over the years of Mozilla, it has been shown that Mozilla guys have strong attitude against Apple. Back in 2010, Mozilla announced that they won't release Firefox for iOS platform. However they were eager to get into other platforms.

Umm, that's because Apple decided non-WebKit based browsers were strictly not allowed on iPhone and iPad.
Don't blame Mozilla for choosing to not release Firefox for iOS, when Apple doesn't actually want it on there.

Microsoft might be slightly late to the tablet game, however, there's no doubt that Microsoft will win the market place and the love from consumers, just like the browser. We all aware that Microsoft was late to the browser, but with the release of IE4, Microsoft killed Netscape's market.

As any Microsoft die hard fans know, Microsoft has very huge market share which is unbeatable. With the release of Microsoft's Surface, it is without a doubt that it would further expand the experience of the very much desired and very powerful Windows 8.

Mozilla has a strong tendency and superior support of Windows platform. It is expected that Firefox would perform exceptionally well on Microsoft Surface. (From the fact: Firefox drops the support of Mac OS X Tiger (released in 2005) on Firefox 4, while still supporting Windows 2000 (released in 2000) until Firefox 12)

Read Write Web posted video comparison on Microsoft's press event on Monday and Apple's keynote some 28 months ago. Take a look on how Microsoft nailed it, and how Apple screwed it up.

The entry level version of the new Microsoft Surface tablet computer, contains an ARM processor, and will
run Windows RT, where the main UI is Metro, but also featuring a version of the regular Windows desktop
running as an app, but the only regular desktop application that it'll be allowed to run, is the next version
of Microsoft Office, so effectively, the nearest equivalent Apple product is the iPad.

The Pro version contains an Intel Core i5 processor, and will run the full Windows 8 Professional OS with
both the new Metro UI, and the ability to run standard Windows desktop applications, making it more
of an ultrabook/tablet hybrid, so the equivalent Apple product is the MacBook Air.

For the entry level version at least, the things that could potentially make it an iPad killer are the clip on
magnetic cover that doubles as a keyboard, and maybe the price, especially if it's cheaper to buy than
the iPad. As I said before though, if Microsoft don't sell this product outside the USA, like they did
with the Zune player, it'll be an expensive flop ... just like the Zune player was.

Digitimes has an article on potential Surface prices. $599 seems a bit steep for an entry level, considering the $399 introductory price point of the iPad. They are just rumors though, and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Also, the $399 entry point is for a 16 GB ipad.

That is true, but addressing the prices is important. Even at $399 Apple has a huge profit margin on the iPad and can easily cut the price further or add more features to it at that price point.

It's only a rumor, but I think in the end prices and battery life will really determine how successful this product turns out to be.

Mandrake,
You forgot one thing, Apple-bashers only complain about price tags of Apple devices, not Microsoft devices.

Antony, I don't think anyone here is an Apple basher (but... I could wrong). :) And in the same vein, it's a little juvenile to bash Microsoft as well. They're both companies trying to make great products AND make money for their stock holders. Yes, they can be predatory and they can be downright nasty when it comes to launching lawsuits over patent violations but that's part of the business too. MS has taken a huge gamble but I believe it will ultimately pay off for them although this next couple of years are going to be rough. Having a Windows Phone, I know first hand how elegant the metro system can be. I have no doubt that the tablets will be nothing short of awesome BUT whether they will be adopted by consumers early on remains to be seen.
