It seems like the Microsoft's upcoming Surface is simply too hot for PC makers to handle, according to Cnet News.com.

"[PC makers] are pissed off and they are looking for strategies now to not only counter the iPad but counter Surface," said a source at a large company that's part of the ecosystem -- the component suppliers and device manufacturers -- that does business with PC makers.

(...)

Microsoft, some say, was left with little choice but to throw down the gauntlet to PC companies.
"If Microsoft had seen compelling enough plans from [PC makers], they wouldn't have needed to do this," Patrick Moorhead, president of Moor Insights & Strategy, told CNET earlier in the week, referring to the Surface launch.

The report clearly suggests that Microsoft Surface is, without a doubt, an iPad killer, hence the PC makers are worried.

That reports suggests nothing of the kind, especially the section you quoted. It merely states that the
makers of standard x86 PC's (the likes of Dell, HP, Asus ... etc.) are not only wanting to counter the
effect of the iPad with their desktops/laptops, but now also counter the upcoming MS Surface too.

If anything, it's on the contrary. Microsoft Surface looks to damage PC OEMs rather than iPad sales.

Like I've said before, Microsoft Surface can only really be an iPad killer if it's entry level Windows RT
model is competitively priced against the iPad, and also sold internationally beyond the US borders.
The "Pro" model of Microsoft Surface, running Windows 8 Pro, is more an "ultrabook" than simply
a tablet ... the only equivalent product from Apple is the MacBook Air.

Unfortunately, there are some analyses do not share our excitement and prospective of Microsoft Surface.

And quoting from linked article, Microsoft said the consumer-oriented Windows RT Surface would be "competitive with a comparable ARM tablet." That says a lot.

Microsoft is still the world's biggest software company, and still is one of the richest companies in the world. It is clearly that Microsoft's Surface can and will be the iPad killer. We all know the history: Netscape had huge market share back then, PlayStation also had huge market share, they did not last after Microsoft entered the markets.

Microsoft founder Mr Bill Gates spoke to Charlie Rose on Rose's PBS show about the excitement of Microsoft Surface. (And we are all excited and all eager to get one for ourselves!)

"You don't have to make a compromise. You can have everything you like about a tablet and everything you like about a PC all in one device. And so that should change the way people look at things."

Mr Gates also stated that Surface allows users to be creative in a way that the iPad doesn't. This was a fusing of the tablet and PC category and even Apple might have to make a Surface-like device.

Microsoft changed the world way before Apple, and millions of Microsoft loyal fans can't agree anything less. Once again, Microsoft Surface is without a doubt the iPad killer.

Cnet News.com has the report

So, according to specifications published by Microsoft, the higher end level (a.k.a. the “of course” model for potential buyers) has mini DisplayPort.

Mini DisplayPort is not exactly an Apple technology, but many Apple bashers (or Microsoft die-hard fans) would associate mini DisplayPort to Apple rather than miniaturised version of the DisplayPort digital audio-visual interface, which is an industry standard.

A top-end iPad killer containing mini DisplayPort is going to be an issue for Microsoft die-hard fans.

I don't see the Surface as an ipad killer (at least not initially). MS really had very little choice but to take the direction it has taken and try and re-invent itself to a certain extent by producing its own hardware and looking to address the increasingly mobile consumer and business world. In the long run I believe that MS will be successful but there's going to be pain along the way. This idea of hating one company and loving another in a religious manner is passe and frankly, a bit silly. Google in particular and Facebook to a lesser degree, have changed the computing world. It's no longer a MS versus Apple world. We now have far more choices as Android becomes increasingly powerful and ubiquitous. And now Amazon is looking to enter the mainstream as well... perhaps even with a smart phone. There are exciting times just ahead and Apple should really have its eyes trained on Google as Steve Jobs feared.

According to a Swedish website, Microsoft's upcoming gotta-be-wonderful fondleslab Surface will start at whopping $1,002 (USD) for Windows RT with 32GB to an eye-watering $2,150 (USD) for Windows Pro with 128GB model. (Cnet News.com reports).

Let's not forget, the Microsoft's upcoming gotta-be-super-wonderful fondleslab Surface a.k.a. the iPad Killer is not just like competitors' offerings, it has the world's most powerful Windows Pro built-in.

I seriously doubt that figure, Antony. It's unconfirmed and pure speculation. If it were true,MS is cutting their own throats.

Here's another take for the upcoming hot Microsoft device - Surface, the iPad killer. This time from Cnet.

Cnet's Eric Franklin reckons $530 for the 32GB and $630 price tag for 64GB Surface RT version. And for the killer version which everybody wants to get hold of one... only $850 for 64GB and $950 for 128GB which runs full Windows 8, the next market leading operating system.

That's not a bad price and for that I might actually be tempted. If everything they're saying about the Surface proves true, this could be an awesome tablet capable of some pretty serious work. Guess we'll have to wait.

I have learned from having a smart phone (DROID 4) that I have no use for nor need of a tablet. I tried bringing Twitter and Facebook to the phone. They did of course run very well. But, I learned that when I am away from the computer, I want to be AWAY from it, not carry it with me.

Needless to say, Twitter and Facebook are gone from my smart phone.

Love my iapd, Richard. It's incredibly portable (i.e. light-weight) and versatile. My wife and I each have our own. Every morning we head to our favorite coffee shop before work. After a few minutes of chatting we're off checking our email accounts, reading the news and visiting our favorite forums. When we travel, the ipad cannot be beaten.

You know you don't have to respond to the Facebook/Twitter messages immediately.

Checking out Facebook is a great thing to do while getting through Sydney's super-slow traffic on a bus. (Unlike Don, I don't own a powerful BMW, as a matter of fact, I don't even own a car. Also unlike Don who whined about 50 kph (or 31 mph) being slow, we would be smile if we can get that speed in Sydney.)

To make Microsoft's upcoming gotta-be-super-wonderful fondleslab Surface a.k.a. the iPad Killer even stronger on killing Apple's iPad (and keep Microsoft fans happier), it seems like that Microsoft is cutting down the usual PC partnerships and decided to build the fondleslab Surface itself.

A Microsoft's long-term PC partner was clearly not happy about this.
“They are doing something to kill the whole ecosystem,” Wang said of the decades-long partnership between the PC makers like his Taipei-based company and Microsoft. The Surface will compete with Acer’s Iconia tablet.

They have all this cash,” he said. “They could kill everybody.”
