Like many people in Australia, I've been glued myself to the TV news for the last many days.

Queensland hit flood in many towns just before the new year, the total flooded area was bigger than France and Germany combined, luckily, the most of those flooded areas not populated.

Then on 12th January, the flood hit south east part of Queensland where Australia's third largest city Brisbane is.

The Queensland Government has launched an appeal to help fellow Queenslanders affected by the recent floods. Many communities have been devastated. Some families have lost everything. You can help make a difference by donating to the Premier's Flood Relief Appeal.

(Yes, I know the Brisbane flooding did not make the mega headlines internationally like Hurricane Katrina did in 2005, but still.)

The BBC, for one, had plenty of stories run on the floods.

It's pretty awful seeing the pictures, seeing the damage caused to people's homes. Even more tragic are the people that lost their lives in this unfortunate incident. I'd offer my sincere condolences to anyone effected by the flooding in Queensland.

I made a donation to The Salvation Army, and hopefully most other Australians will do the same. Every last dollar does help, after all.

There was a story on our news broadcast the other night showing an elderly lady accompanied by her younger family members, shoving mud and debris out of her house and down the driveway. It was heartbreaking to see all of her belongings covered in mud and essentially worthless. But her spirit was incredible. What a strong and courageous person. You couldn't help but admire her.

Some updates on Queensland flood from this morning's Sunrise (Channel 7):
Brisbane CBD is still partially closed, power is still out in some major CBD buildings. 17600 homes and businesses are still without power.
Huge number of volunteers showed up to help Queensland clean up over the weekend. More than twice as expected.

Unfortunately, some bad news for the victims are reported, looters and scams.
Residents in flood affected areas are being approached by fake trades people demanding money in advance for repairs and disappearing. Residents have also been asked for bank details to access flood relief funds by phone scamming.
