DJGM-i Distro Auto Install - temporarily suspended

Postby DJGM » Mon 11 Nov, 2002 11:27 pm

I've been working on a new way to download and install the DJGM-i Distros
of Netscape 7.0, for those using just about any Gecko based web browser
on Windows, that supports the XPI (cross platform installer) method of
installing addons. I call it the "DJGM-i Distro Auto Install System"

Basically, you click on the XPI link for any of the DJGM-i Distro "editions",
and your Gecko based browser will automatically download and fire up the
distro's installer program. It will also leave a copy of the distro's *.exe file,
so you can store it any spare folder on tyour HDD, for future use, like just
in case you find the need to re-install.

For this to work, you will need to make sure that the "Software Installation"
option is checked in the Preference of your current Gecko based browser.
(To check this, go - Edit - Preferences - Advanced - Software Installation)

For those of you wanting to try the DJGM-i Distros, and you haven't already
got any Gecko based browser on your PC, don't worry. The DJGM-i Distros
will still be available as ordinary *.exe files you can download for later use.

UPDATE (19th Feb 2003)
I've temporarily suspended the DJGM-i Auto Install System. This is
because the SD701 FTP server, where the auto install xpi files are
usually hosted, is due to be relocated to a new datacentre soon.
The DJGM-i Auto Install will be re-instated when the SD701 FTP
server have been relocated and returns to normal operation.

Hey DJGM - what's the difference between your installation and the Silly Dog one?

Comparing the DJGM-i Distros with the SD701 Distros . . .

Postby DJGM » Thu 14 Nov, 2002 7:44 pm

The main difference is a few more options. I have three different "editions"
of the DJGM-i Distros (Full-On - Pigeon - Lite), whereas there are just two
of the SD701 distros (Streamline - Standalone). Here's a comparison . . .

DJGM-i Distros:

Full On Edition - Filesize = 27.8MB
Netscape Navigator 7 - Netscape Mail and News
(plus Spellchecker for email and HTML editing)
Built in combined AOL/ICQ Instant Messenger
Macromedia Flash Player - Sun Java 2 v1.4.0
RealPlayer 8.0 Basic - Nullsoft Winamp v2.8.1
plus Classic Theme and Netscape Composer.
No Netscape Network registration nag screen.

Pigeon Edition - Filesize = 23.8MB
Netscape Navigator 7 - Netscape Mail and News
(plus Spellchecker for email and HTML editing)
Built in combined AOL/ICQ Instant Messenger
Macromedia Flash Player - Sun Java 2 v1.4.0
plus Classic Theme and Netscape Composer.
No Netscape Network registration nag screen.

Lite Edition - Filesize = 9.6MB
Navigator 7.0 - Composer - Classic Theme.
No Netscape Network registration nag screen.

SD701 Distros:

Streamline Edition - Filesize = 13MB
Navigator 7.0 - Composer - Classic Theme
NS Mail & News - Macromedia Flash Player
Spellchecker for email and HTML editing.
Built in combined AIM/ICQ Messenger
No NS Network registration nag screen.

Standalone Editon - Filesize = 10.2MB
Netscape Navigator 7.0 - Netscape Composer
NS Classic Theme - Macromedia Flash Player
No NS Network registration nag screen.

At the end of the day, it's up to you, whichever you decide to go for.

Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

I appreciate your explaining that. I think actually I have run both versions of the 6's before unknowingly, both done excellently, my hat's off to you both, nice work again on 7.
Bottom line, we're all Netscapians at heart here whether you be a programmer, hacker, or just plain old consumer of the end result trying to get the optimal results using the application. When do you suppose we'll see Microsoft going open source - ever! LOL. The psychology of open source is amazing in my opinion in that it cultivates a more perceptive breed.
When I'm tuning my guitar I sometimes think how bland things would be if there were only 18 chords available at any given time and everything you composed had to be structured within only those 18 chords, such as Microsoft's view on the world. So much more interesting the thousands upon thousands of chords Mozilla/Netscape, Linux, brings to the table of cultivation.

Netscapians? I reckon the term "Netscapologists" would be more appropriate!
(I hereby claim all rights/patents to the aforementionedterm "Netscapologists"!)

Will Microsoft ever go "open source"? That'll only ever happen
when the devil comments how cold, hell has suddenly become!

I hope the day never comes when the net becomes MS.net!
As we all know, that's what Bill Gates is really aiming for!
:?

Are we gonna let that happen? Of course we ain't!

Too bad IIS only has a 20% market share, comapred to Apache's 65% share. And more than half of all webservers run Linux, then we have Solaris and others.
