Still problems with plug-ins

Postby jksteinhauer » Fri 28 May, 2004 10:58 pm

One of the primary aversions I've had over the years to using Opera consistently was my inability to get plug-ins to perform as well as they do with Netscape and/or Mozilla. I've got my entire plug-in folder copied from Mozilla to Opera and still I cannot get Shockwave for example to work, period.
On the positive, I just installed 7.5 over my previous 7.23 and I must say I was quite taken aback. Nice looking! Had to do a bit of modification to my top taskbar and still have some adjusting to do yet; for instance, I prefer to have my icons at top (Home/Back/Forward, etc.) and then also in my address bar I also have Back/Forward/Wand, etc. I don't need it twice but I can't seem to find a way to delete the secondary stuff out of my address bar.
And splash screen. I'm a registered user and I still get splash screen? I even unchecked 'show start up dialogue' ... still get splash. Annoying.
Nice to look in on Opera now and again.

You should not have installed 7.5 on top of 7.23.

7.5 is very much different, especially when it comes to e-mail, and it is recommended that one uninstall 7.23, before installing 7.5. Should you decide to do this, make copies of your contacts (contacts.adr) and bookmarks (opera6.adr) files, then copy them into the C:\Program Files\Opera75 (or whatever directory you choose to install it in) \Profile directory afterwards, and before running it for the first time. If you use skins, make copies of those, then copy as above, except those go into \Profile\Skins. These are the only files I make copies of when installing a new version, but it's your choice whether or not to copy these or any at all.

If you right-click an icon in the Address Bar, you will see an option remove from toolbar.

The splash screen has nothing to do with registration. Why it does not work as expected, I do not know, I have always used the splash screen myself.

You may also want to try copying the Shockwave plugin into one or both of these directories: C:\Program Files\Opera75\Plugins or C:\Program Files\Opera75\Program\Plugins

Yes, I figured once I opened 7.5 for the first time that perhaps I should have uninstalled 7.23 prior, 7.5 being rather significantly different in appearance from the get-go. Running XP, in Add/Remove, Opera is listed only once. Will I receive a prompt as to which version I wish to remove?
In program files I do see two separate files for 7.23 and 7.5. I do not use Opera that consistently to where losing any profile info would be crucial so I would imagine a safe bet to also delete 7.23 file.
Will retry copying plug-in folder from Mozilla to 7.5.
Thanks.

When I ran Windows 98, I always uninstalled an older version first, before installing a new version.

You can try uninstalling it from Add/Remove and see what is left afterwards. I can't guarantee the results though. The uninstall process (one of its windows) should show which version is being uninstalled.

Add/Remove programs will tell you what version you are removing once you choose it. You can still cancel that action if you wish. Your Opera profile is stored in a seperate file from the program file (C:/Document and Settings/User Name/ Application Data), so no information there will be lost with an uninstall. If you feel your plugins folder isn't corrupt, copy it in a safe place until you reinstall Opera 7.5 and then copy it back.

I had Opera 7.23 and Opera 7.5 beta on my PC at the same time and there were never any conflicts. They had seperate program files and seperate profile folders (within the main Opera profile folder).

I uninstalled 7.23 and did a re install of 7.50. Since then Opera's already come out with 7.51. Running XP would it be your recommendation to uninstall every increment before installing a new one? Using Mozilla I have always just installed on top of a previous build and Mozilla's good about removing outdated components during the install process.

I have uninstalled old versions of software, before installing an updated version, even with XP.

I would recommend downloading Opera 7.51 as it fixes a security-related issue, but uninstall 7.50 first.

(Although unrelated to this thread, there is an issue with ZoneAlarm 5 where it has problems with other anti-virus software, the ZA instructions were to install this over the previously installed version. In doing so, I had problems, but the problems corrected itself when this was uninstalled first, and the previous version of ZA was installed afterwards. So it it definitely is a plus to uninstall an old version, before installing a new version of the same software.)
