Splash screen

Postby Marilyn » Wed 04 Sep, 2002 9:56 am

Hi,
In every version of Netscape starting with Net. 6 I have entered space-nosplash and also tried -quiet. Indeed the splash screen does not appear when I start Netscape. Only Navigator starts and not the Mail window. I have to manually bring the mail up. If I add space-mail to the icon properties then the mail comes up but not Navigator. I am now currently using final release of Net. 7.0. I put a search in this forum and also the sec.7 windows forum and was unable to find anyone who ask about this.
My friend is running Net.7 final and also has this problem.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Marilyn,
everyone has a Profile, so you must enter the profile to get directly into Navigator. So, in your path you will have: -quiet -P your name

As there should be a space before - quiet, there must be a space before -P and also before your name(being the profile name). And, Navigator will open.

If you always want mail to start as well as Navigator:

Edit -> Preferences

Select Appearance

Select what you would like to open at startup (Navigator, Mail, etc)

Hendikins, Thank you for responding. I do have Navigator and Mail and Newsgroup checked in appearance. They do come up together until I add the nosplash to the icon properties on the desktop.

Fulvio,
The problem is not Navigator but the mail. With nosplash in the icon properties the mail will not appear unless I bring it up manually.

Thanks for your help.

You could try -quiet -mail -browser

That works on Linux (well, except -quiet - I have to use -splash instead to turn the splash screen *on*), but no idea about Windows...

The problem you are experiencing is Bug 58523.

Hendikins,

I followed your advice and it worked! Adding: -mail _browser did the trick.
Thank you I have trying to solve this since Net.6 :lol:

Marylin,
I never try to bring up both Navigator and Mail, at the same time. There may be an advantage, but I could never see it. If I am not interested in going to Navigator, I can use the Mail and News icon provided by Netscape, otherwise, if I am in Navigator, I click on the Mail envelope, and I am in.
I would appreciate if you would tell me why you want to use that set up.

Fulvio,

There really isn't an advantage it's just me. My Road Runner has information on the home page that I read every day. I have always had both come up in Netscape and I suppose I got use to doing it that way.

You can set that page to appear when you start Mail/News by doing the following:

Edit -> Preferences
Select Mail & Newsgroups

Enter that page in the Mail Start Page box.

Restart mail, et <snip>!

Good suggestion, I think, but bad French. I could not help it. Voila!
