Let us say that a download is 15 MB and during the process of downloading (without a download manager), the download is terminated... maybe at the 7 MB level. What happens to those files? Do they reside somewhere on one's hard drive taking up space? I assume they are not retrievable "unless" one has a download manager, right? Where do those 7 MB of files go... just off into cyber space?

This is a complicated question, indeed.
The short answer, depend on the server if the server supports resume functions. Download manager wouldn't help much if the the server does not support resume function (feature).
Netscape Communicator 4.xx (can't remember which version, but v6+ works better, see below) support resume feature, but again, depends on the server. Download manager might help if you use dial up connection.

Where are those partials? Depends on that software you use to download. In NS 4 or earlier, it would be saved into the folder you select for your downloads; from Netscape 6, they followed MSIE's method, saved partial download into some temporary folder that is designed particularly for holding partials (saved in salted names). This way, it works better in resuming (since most servers today support this features).

(first part, see above), Where did they go? If you use Netscape 6/7 to download those, check your profile folder (see http://sillydog.org/netscape/plocation.html for profile location)
and look for subfolders (can't remember the name, since I removed all those partials time long ago).

Thanks for the response. The download was the 133 MB (yeah... 133 MB!!!) SP1 for Windows XP. I was using IE6 and saving it to a folder I had created. After five hours (I had reached the 94 MB level) my connection with the server was terminated. I could not find any trace of the 94 MB I had downloaded AND when I tried to reconnect and resume, it took me back to point zero!!! Needless to say, I'm a bit ticked off!

So, what happened to those 94 MB?

The news said the XP SP1 would release on 9th Sept (US time).

What happened to 94MB? most likely in your MSIE's TEMP directory. Most likely, if you download from FTP server, just try again and you can only hope that is would "resume" the file.

You may try to make a copy of the file first, but in most cases, it is not necessary. And the 94MB file is somewhere in your hidden directories.
