How on earth are we supposed to help you with that information?

How big is your LAN? What are your TCP/IP settings? Do you run an NT domain? What brand and model is your hub/switch? Do you have a router? Is your network firewalled?

That doesn't help at all, and I really don't think you need our help, or you would have given the proper information, as I stated above. Thread Closed.

Dear Wellander,

If you are asking for help, please describe your situation clearly.
Firstly, use proper grammar, and don't leave out the punctuation.

What exactly does following mean?
I can not share files between windows 2000 and 98 but the vice versa works

You can not share files between Windows 2000 and 98 but the vice versa works? If you can not share files between Win 2000 and Win 98, how could you make sharing files between Win 98 and Win 2000 work?

Please put your replies outside of the quote.

Would you please tell me the difference between
sharing between Win2000 and Win98 AND sharing between Win98 and Win2000?

Hi,
Sharing between 9x and 2000 works sharing between 2000 and any thing on the nt kernle works like NT4.0 and xp.
Sharing between 9x and another 9x link ME and 95 works.
I can between 2000 and 9x.
I hope that answered your question.

In the first post, you said you couldn't share between windows 2000 and 98.
Now, you said,
"Sharing between 9x and 2000 works"
AND
"I can between 2000 and 9x"

Problem solved I guess?

See the below...

This thread is confusing me, but any properly setup network, be it a Domain or Workgroup, should be able to share files. I've ran a network with everything from high end XP machines, to low end Windows 95 machines, all can share files fine.

If you formated your Windows 2000 partition as a NTFS file system, then Windows 98 will not be able to read any files in the Windows 2000 partition (Windows 98 cannot recognize NTFS files). You will have to convert the NTFS files to FAT32 before Windows 98 can read them.

It matters not whether the drivers are partitioned as NTFS or FAT32, Windows 9x can still read files off network shares - although you cannot create NTFS partitions in 9x.

Wellander,

Add a user to the Windows 2000 machine, with at least power user access, e.g. username is 'Joe' and password is 'qwerty', now go and logon to your 98 machine with the login you created on the Windows 2000 machine. In order to access files off of a Win2k machine, the user needs a login name on the machine, for authentication and security purposes. This is not the case if they are connected to an NT domain, as any user that is logged on to the domain will be granted read-only access to files on any network shares in the network, unless the machine with the network share is configured to allow full access.
