System Requirements of Mac OS X Jaguar

Postby hartlandcat » Tue 18 Nov, 2003 5:21 pm

Can anyone tell me how much hard disk space Mac OS X Jaguar takes up? It's no longer listed on the Apple website, the required hard drive space is missed off its page at Amazon, and everywhere else I've found have had varied results.

Thanks! ^_^

Mac OS X requires 1.5GB of HDD space for the full installation, but there are some things in
the installation that you probably won't need or want or install. You'll get a chance to pick
and choose the optional Mac OS X software components you wish to install.

For instance, if there's no printer with your iMac, you won't need to install the printer
drivers. IIRC, there are a numbers of international language modules/components
you probably won't want (or even need) to install.

When I installed Mac OS X for the first time, the optional components I choose to
install took up just under 1GB of HDD space. I choose not to install any of those
printer drivers or any of the international component gubbins.

But when I upgraded to Mac OS X 10.1 (from 10.0) I ended up gaining just over 100MB
of HDD space, instead of losing any. The Mac OS X 10.1 installer disc actually only
replaced older components with the newer updated versions. I think the extra
hard disk space gained may have been the installer cleaning out obsolete
temporary files that were no longer needed

After the upgrade to 10.2, I regained about 20MB of HDD space. Again, the 10.1
installer CD only replaced older components with newer versions, and cleared
out obsolete temporary files that were no longer needed

After my eventual upgrade to Mac OS X 10.3, I probably won't regain any diskspace!

Thanks! ^_^ I was a bit concerned because Dabs.com said that it required 3GB of hard disk space. But I'll definately upgrade to OS X now. I have a 6GB hard disk, and I'm using about 2GB of it at the moment, but I'll be able to get rid of some of my OS 9 programs when I upgrade to OS X.

Yes, I'll probably add more RAM soon (if I can find how to open the thing up! ^_^)

Anyhow, I've just got Mac OS X Jaguar from Ebay!! Should be arriving sometime over the next few days.

since u have a tray loader i am guessing u have an iMac and to add memory or ram if you turn it over while the machine is off and unplugged you should see a lil scre in the middle. Like you can see where there is an area that will come out, should be 6" by 3" or so with a screw in the middle. If you unscrew that, that is where it goes.

Here's the guide I've referred to when I've upgraded my old iMac internally . . .

Upgrading an iMac

When I wanted to upgrade my iMac's RAM and HDD, this guide was a godsend!

Here's another informative guide you may find quite useful . . .

Keeping an iMac Current:
UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/85.7 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/85.5
SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!
