Netscape 7.02 does not download files (Anti-Virus,etc.)

Netscape 7.02 does not download files (Anti-Virus,etc.)

For the past month I have been unable to download Norton Anti Virus Updates and many other online files and must use MS IE instead.

I use OS Win 98 SE and Netscape 7.02 Streamline or Stand Alone. I have removed and re-installed both of these many times but the problem still exists. I am quite satisfied with 98 SE and have always used Netscape as my browser. I do not have any virus as I check frequently. This problem occurs on 3 computers that are not networked. I downloaded and installed all the updates to 98 SE before MS stopped supporting it. Should I remove my Netscape 7.02 and install the full version of Netscape 7.01? I never make Netscape as my default browser so I can use MS IE.

Help! I absolutely refuse to use MS IE except in dire necessity!!

Reinstalling will do nothing, and taking one step back to 7.01 will do even less. I am not familiar with the requirements of Norton to download updates, and I would be tempted to say that 7.1 could do the job, because it has an ActiveX plugin, but I have seen your problem mentioned enough times that I will send you in another direction. But I am not even sure about this, since I have seen it as a 7.1 problem. Anyway... http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns71cantdownload.html

Please be specific as to the Netscape download problem. Are these .exe files? .zip files? What happens when you click a download link? Do you have a sample page with a link to a specific file that you can't download? Do you get any error message?

One easy thing to try first:

Click Tools, Download Manager. When the Download Manager window opens, press the Ctrl-A keys together to select all entries, then tap the Delete key to remove all entries. Then close the Download Manager window and try downloading again.

If this doesn't work, or if deleting all the entries using the Download Manager windows takes too long, try the suggestions on the page Fulvio referenced but start with the deletion of downloads.rdf. Compreg.dat doesn't exist, as far as I know, in NS7.02.

For the record, Netscape version 7.1 is the last Netscape browser version. (I assume you meant 7.1 not 7.01) Netscape 7.02 is earlier than 7.1 but it is better for some Windows98 users. See the "sticky"topic, "NS 7.1 system (GDI) resource drainage in Win98"
