"Setup has encountered a network problem and ..."

Postby Roy » Wed 07 Apr, 2004 11:00 am

Though this message has been mentioned in two other topics, the problem with it was not the main issue of those topics, so I have decided to make it a topic.

I have had this problem a number of times when testing out new install configuration files for Netscape 7.02 and 7.1. I have still yet to figure out what I'm doing to cause this problem to occur.

However, once this message does occur, I am not able to install ANY previously good Netscape installs that had installed successfullywith no problems. The problem eventually "goes away", but I know what needs to be done to get the problem to go away.

My guess is that the install is either setting something in the registry or setting a flag in some file somewhere on my PC. When I attempt to do a re-install, I make sure to uninstall the previous version plus the Mozilla, install folder and any files in the temp folder. I do not remove anything from the registry.

I am doing this install on a PC with Microsoft XP SP1 and when the install does work, the log file indicates that "All components have been found locally. No components will be downloaded."

Some more possibilities

Postby Roy » Wed 07 Apr, 2004 11:15 am

When doing the install using local files, this message comes up and seems to indicate that the problem is with the "recommended.start" file.

If I do an install getting the files from the internet, it reports a problem with the "NSUninst.exe" file and repeated tries will not get past whatever "problem" it is having.

Looking at the directory where it is attempting to get the files I noticed that all the files are in lowercase. Is there any possibility that my computer is "locking" onto a special server location that is case dependent?

Since other people have had this problem and since it seems to just "go away" that seems to be a possible cause.

If you've had this problem, please post a reply.

The last time I had this problem it took three days to clear it and again I was unsure as to what I did. I did try conntecting with a different proxy server and I did clear out my history, cookies, and temporary files. Since I has lost my installed Netscape browser, I was forced to use IE 6.0.28 to get a working install.

Roy,
I dug out one of the threads, needed if one wants to compare what happened with your new posts. http://sillydog.org/forum/viewtopic.php ... rk+problem
I could not find enough information in the above thread, nor your posts to come up with any answer. What type of download have you been using? It seems to be the stub file, to download the program from the site.
That method of installing has been know to give problems, and it could very well be the source of your problems. Get a complete download file, like from http://sillydog.org/narchive/ I never had an installation problem this way, but had problem twice with the stub installer. You realize that you are at the mercy of the server? I would have never used Netscape, if I had had to rely to thatc unstable way to do things. Isn't the time taken, the same either way?

Not using a stub installer

Postby Roy » Tue 13 Apr, 2004 10:12 am

I am not using a stub installer. What I think is happening is that when I create an "problem" in my set of stand alone install files, e.g., naming a file that it needs incorrectly or leaving out a file that is needed, that when this happens, the install processing attempts to connect to a Netscape server.

I know that my install(s) do not require an internet connection because I have been able install my versions of Netscape 7.1 without an internet connection. And after the install has completed and I then enable the internet connection, the my newly installed browser works fine.

But why this connection location seems to be "locked" and used for any future installs I don't know. I'm not hoping to have it happen again, but the next time that it does, I will definitely attempt to clear my local cache and cookies before attempting to do install using a set of files that I know works.
