XP problems/connection refused

Postby Fulvio » Wed 24 Jul, 2002 6:12 pm

My son was having problems with his XP laptop. He did something, while out of town, which has given glitches here and there. As you may know, we have a cable connection, and the laptop is set up in a network.
My first test was, of course ,with Netscape. There was a 6.1, but it was not doing well. I was getting errors when trying to connect with any POP3 account, although I could use my single IMAP account. So since 6.2.3 was downloaded, I figured that it could be installed. 6.1 was removed via Add/Remove. As I installed 6.2.3,I used the same profile as before, and, I got connection refused when attempting to contact Netscape.com. I tried another site, and it left me out in the street.
I created a new profile, and it was the same.
Any idea what could cause this craziness?

Fulvio,

Can you connect to the net at all?

Try
Start | Run | type "cmd" | type "ipconfig" then see if you have any IP Address assigned. (not all zeros nor all 256 (or 255))

That problem has been fixed. It was of a case of an incompletely removed Zone Alarm. As soon as it was removed, everything started tov work normally. But, now I have an ISP problem, and I have not been able to connect with anything AOL. And, who knows,it may Zone Alarm doing naughty things to the other, main computer.

Could you believe that I would learn from the XP problems, and not get involved with ZoneAlarm? No, I could not do it, and late Thursday night, I upgraded to the new 3.1 free version. To make a long story short, I am back online after almost two full days. The Cox techs even advised me to reformat the drive. I found the culprit file . "Vsdata95.vxd" which Windows does not let you delete unless you go in Safe Mode.

Fulvio,

Do you directly connect to the net or through network?
