solution: no Mail notification sound after wake up

Apple Mail (Mail.app)'s new mail notification sound may stop working after waking up the comptuer

Background and problem:
This problem appears to occur with some computers running Apple OS X 10.3 :panther:. When user let the computer to sleep without quitting the Mail first, Mail will check for new Mail but the notification sound won't work, unless quitting the Mail and re-launching the Mail after waking up computer.

A few threads has been discussed in Apple Discussion (forums), however no clear solution has been found.

Quick workaround:
Quit the Mail and restart Mail after you wake up your Mac from sleep.

Better yet solution: (but a bit complicated)
Rebuild the Mail's plist file.
To rebuild the Mail's plist file:
  • Quit the Mail.
  • Open Finder and go to Home directory (Shift + :cmd: + H)
  • go to Library folder
  • go to Preferences folder
  • look for the file called com.apple.mail.plist, move it to desktop or other location.
  • restart Mail.
Note:
When you restart Mail, you will noticed that all your settings and mails are gone. Your mails are still in your computer, but not displayed.
You will need to build up each email accounts again. Once those new accounts are built, all your old mails will re-appear.
You will also need to rebuild any other settings (e.g. customised toolbar, mail rules, spam filters ... etc)

And I've verified above method and it does solve the no notification sound issue in my PowerMac G4 (dual 1.42).
My new PowerBook does have this problem.

Credit goes to Apple Care. Yes, I called them. But I think it's a good idea to share it since I couldn't find a solution on Apple Discussion and the net.

The moral of the story is: don't let it take naps!

Good point!

The thing is that, the sleeping feature works a lot better in Macs than in Windows.
And most people like me are too lazy to switch off the computer. :-)
