7.1 Email Notification will not work ---- Please Help

Postby Kanook » Sun 18 Jul, 2004 7:39 pm

Gidday All :D

This morning approx 1:00 AM whilst surfing and thinking I decided to Download Netscape ! The last time I downloaded this was many years ago and it caused me grief but I thought I would give it another go.

My problem is the email notification in 7.1

I set up the Mail to check every 10 mins but it doesnt ???? Netscape says I can close it and just have it in the Sys Tray, I dont have to have the prog open, but I sit and sit and sit (Grrrrrrrrr......) and it doesnt get my email ??

When I open Netscape and click on the Maiul icon bottom left of Netscapes page it opens the mail and BINGO in comes the mail and a little notifier pops up bottom right, why wont it work when Netscape is in the Sys Tray ?

I have restarted my computer, I have checked the mail settings and it gets my mail fine, only when the prog is running ? This is the main reason I thought I would try netscape again as that Outlook express does not check for email when the prog is not running. If I cant get this to work I may as welll uninstall netscape and go back to Outlook.

Please Help, I hate Microsoft as much as the next man, but its no use having Netscape if I cant get it to work, what am I doing wrong :(

Would Zone Alarm cause this drama ?????????????????
I am running XP Pro

Hello Kanook,
Welcome to SillyDog701.
To my understanding, you will to have Netscape running at background to have the Netscape Mail checking emails.

A bit more detail, Netscape Mail needs to be run at once, then you will need to keep Netscape open (either browser or Mail or both).

The icon in the Sys Tray is for quick launch I believe.

Alternatively, you can download a copy of Netscape 4.8, set up e-mail in that, and use the nsnotify.exe file to have it check your mail. When it says you have new mail, you can just start 7.1 and work from there. Since nsnotify.exe is a diffrent program than the app itself, you can run it without running the whole netscape.exe program.

Thankyou very much for the swift replies, very much appreciated.

Well Im disappointed :(

I cant understand why Netscape would have this notification in an earlier version and not in a new version :?

Well I guess I will be hitting the old Uninstall button as I really hoped this would do this function, and when the Netscape Website says :-

"Mail Alerts give discreet notification of new e-mail messages in your computer's system tray-even if you don't have Netscape open on your desktop."

I took this as Sys Tray checking....... BUGGER !!!!!!!

I will go back to using my Mozilla Browser and Dirty Old Outlook

I might try Netscape in another few years, see if it does what im after then.

Again Thanks for the help

Im Back :)

I just tried leaving the Navigator minimised and as you said it found my mail

I think I will keep Netscape as this means I will only have to have my browser minimised not browser and email, and the fully intergrated package is a good idea...................... Plus I think I can put the Ebay Toolbar on Netscape ................. I think ?????

Well Netscape hasnt crashed on me or locked up (Fingers Crossed) so they have improved it from the one i tried years ago, so I will keep using it, would love to see more themes for the 7.1 , does any one know of any sites with themes for this version ?? I believe there is only two on Netscape site , Is there more available ???

Thanks everyone for the help, I am amazed at how quickly you came to my rescue :D

There are lots of themes available at http://themes.mozdev.org . Some of the themes are not completely built for NS7.1. If there is no Netscape 7.1 version on those sites, you can download a Mozilla 1.4 version which will work in both Moz1.4 and NS7.1.

You have a problem that other people have had, thinking that the new versions, like 6/7.x would be like the 4.x, but perhaps better.
The problem is that the new Netscape had to be contructed from the ground up, and did not have all the features present in the old versions.
I don't know about the quote which you are giving from the Netscape Website. AOL owns Netscape, and they have let go the people who were involved in the the development of Netscape. However, a new version based on Mozilla 1.7.x is forthcoming.
It seems to me that you are more angry at not finding what you are looking for, than have a valid complaint. dluchini gave you a good work around.
In my opinion, since Netscape is based on Mozilla, try what Mozilla has to offer you. And, if Mail Notification is so important, I suggest that you try any program which satisfies you. The old NS4.x mail notification works fine for one account, but is totally useless for several accounts. The new Netscape is designed for several accounts. I have eight accounts. If you know of a program will give mail notification for that many accounts, please let me know.

Hi,
Do you have it enabled?

"BINGO in comes the mail and a little notifier pops up bottom right".
This indicates that the notifier is enabled.

Fulvio,

I am confused by what you said:

The old NS4.x mail notification works fine for one account, but is totally useless for several accounts. The new Netscape is designed for several accounts. I have eight accounts. If you know of a program will give mail notification for that many accounts, please let me know.

Are you saying that NS 7.1 (and Moz 1.4 +)does not notify for more than one account ?

Later you say:

"BINGO in comes the mail and a little notifier pops up bottom right".
This indicates that the notifier is enabled.

Just trying to get things clear in my mind.

I was saying that the old 4.x notify is useless for multi-accounts. 7.1 x will notify the latest mail which has comes in. For example: my default mail is Cox2, and I have Cox and Cox3, plus others. 4.x mail target only the default Cox2. If there is nothing new in Cox2, I may have several e-mails in the other accounts, but you will notify. In 7.1, I may have new mail in any account, but the visual notify will be only for the latest mail, usually Cox or Cox3. I have not paid attention if the mail icon has any green on it, after opening the newest mail. It is a bear to have any customized notification with any program. One of my favorite is ePrompter, from eprompter.com which has color coded numbering in the systray, plus a .wav file notification. When more than one account has new mail, the customized sound, is...waived.

I looked quite a bit into this notification stuff, and found that it is not useful, and, actually, annoying. A large percentage of my mail ends up in the Junk folder anyway.I check my mail three times each day, and I have my program download every 30 min. That is good enough for me.

Back when I used MSN Messenger, I found a free program called Messenger Plus, which had a very good mail notification for POP3 mail. However, I have not used it for a while, so I am not sure of it still exists. Anyway, I think the URL is www.msgplus.net. If you decide to give it a shot I would appreciate some feedback if it's not too much trouble since I just mightgive it a go myself. :?
