Suspecting that this is probably a WIN XP (Home) OS issue (because I can't seem to do it in either MS Office or NS) BUT knowing that the font of all computer wisdom lies among NS users [;-)], is there a switch somewhere/anywhere in WIN XP, MS Office or NS that would permit me to input such ASCII characters directly?

If you have problems inputting special characters with the numeric keypad,
Is the Num Lock on your keyboard on?
Also, are you remembering to implement leading zeroes in codes (e.g., holding down ALT while typing 0189 for the fraction one-half (½), not 189)
Can you run Character Map (charmap.exe) and copy and paste the symbols in question into a document?

These may or may not help in solving your problem, but at least should cross the most obvious possibilities off the list.

Bloody awkward, time consuming, a general pain in the ......., BUT THE CHARMAP.EXE ROUTINE WORKS!!!!

Thank you EVER so very much, Andrew. Works in NS, Word, Excel, though I'll have to sync fonts among those three applications and the charmap.

Up here in Canada, we anglophones do from time to time have occasion to type words or phrases in French, and it was getting just plain embarrassing not to be able to do so.

Tried the "add the 0" routine; made sure my NumLk function was on ... NO JOY infortunately!

Any other ideas why this function may be eluding my 'puter? I'm running Win XP Home on a Celeron 2 GHz notebook (Acer).

ALT 0128 produces the € (Euro) symbol.

Entering special character or accented character is very easy with a Mac.

press the option key


press the option and shift keys

Above screenshots are based on International US keyboard, there may be some variations across different region. For example, UK keyboard has £ default in Shift + 3.

The option key is the key between control and command (‘cmd’ , NOT ‘apple’ key) keys.

Letter with a specific diacritical mark.
Grave accent (`): Option + `, then the letter
Acute accent (´): Option + e, then the letter
Circumflex accent (ˆ): Option + I, then the letter
Tilde accent (˜): Option + n, then the letter
Umlaut accent (¨): Option + u, then the letter

I can't vouch for it, though. I still wonder why Unicode isn't built into Windows yet. OS X has it, I think.

when you print you go the the 'layout' area of the print dialog and set 'two sided printing' to 'off'

Thanks for the tips, we solved problem some time ago.
There was no option like "print both side" in none of settings (I printed from QuarkXpress). The Mac service guy couldn't find it either, so he reinstalled the OS... Pretty user-friendly is the Mac, don't you think?

thats odd, perhaps you're using an old version of the OS. I got those instructions by looking at my own print pane. i use two sided printing all the time (to conserve paper when i print whole books). havent had problems setting it the way i need.

(btw, i find that new computer users have an easier time with their first platform. if they go to another platform they have learning it harder than the first time because they've learned all the step to do stuff and are too set in their ways to learn it different)
